Hello !

I got a 10mb internet con at the moment using a D-Link router 804 for 2 computers. It was an expesnive router thou pretty old now.

Ive learned that most routers sucks at handling traffic when it comes to internet. But good at lan. Thats my problem now. In most cases its way to slow so I have to disconnect it when I wish to download huge stuff.

Now my second thing, We dont want all these cables anymore and I wounder if there is any good wireless router availbale right now ?

That will fully support my 10mb internet con. And im also thinking about upgrading to 100mb soon so is there a wireless roputer for those kind of speeds ? And hows the stability ? My cabled are rock solid at the moment and I wish to stay that way,

Any suggestions and hints ?

Thanks alot !

Mm that was what I guessed.
But how about 10mb ?
And the stability ?

My D-Link804 is really bad when it comes to wan. I download around 5kb/s with the router and without 8mb/s its a huge different.
Sometime I can max the router to 800kb/s
But still its not working..

Is there a wireless router that support around 8mb/s on the internet? And 100mb/s on lan ?

And if not what wire router should I go for to support a real 100mb/s on the internet as well as lan?

Thanks!

You can buy 108mb wireless, but generally with wireless you won't get even close to what it's rated at, due to the underlying physical overhead and restrictions. Wired is best.

100mb internet connection?!? Whats that like 60 T1 digital lines? almost an OC3 link! And you are getting this in your house?!

hehe I have had 100mb for some month now but they changed it and want to charge more now. I pay $30/month for 10mb now and can get 100mb for $75

So it seems I really should stick with wired routers if I want to be able to use even my 10mb con? That wireless 108mb you spoke of that will not give me a really 108mb how much would I get? will it be better than my old D link 804 ?

If a wireless aint good for my con. what kind of router do you suggest me to buy then ? Cause my d link is really bad and slow when it comes to wan.

Thanks!

Well, any wireless will not give you the speeds it tells you.. there's too much overhead. Here is a listing of the overhead and how it works:
http://blackpacket.net/Common_Wireless_Problems#Wireless_Network_Overhead

If you want all that your connection can give you, then stick with wired. If you want convenience, then go wireless.

Thanks for the information I see that I must stick with wired solution,

But I really need to replace my old D link 804 it seems.
I need a router that support 100mb/s on wan and not only on lan like this d link does!

Is there any router on the market that support 100mb/s for real on wan and lan ?

Thanks!

i dont know of any hat would be able to throughput a true 100 mbits, but if the connection permitted a couple gigabit NICs in a smoothwall box might handle that much traffic.

i'd like ot know where a 100 mbit connection is being had for $75 a month.

So there are no routers that can handle 100mb wan?
I used to use a switch for my computers on my 100mb con.
It worked great without speedloss.
But now when I need a router It really kills my con. Im around 5kb/s sometimes its crazy.

So if there is no routers that support some good speed It seems that I have to stick with unplugging the router and download on 1 computer when I wish to download anything big. And then plugg em back into the router when Im done. Thats very sad... :(

You can get these conns if you live in Sweden :) Ive noticed we have a high standard when it comes to internet conns. Thou we were last to take the step from modem min/taxes to month taxes with a real con.

well to utilise a full 100 mbits... the over head and all will kill it down some. i know theres ones with 100mbit WAN ports but dont know if they could really pass anywhere near 100 mbits. thats why i suggested the smoothwall, as you can build as badass a comp as needed to pass as much bandwidth as you need.

i cant wait till more bandwidth gets cheaper here in the states, especially in the small towns like mine. although im pretty content with my 5 mbits down, but would love more upload speed. capped at 384 kbits.

mm I see... well I got some problems then.
I already got 2 computers going and lots of huge monitors and cablles all over the house. My gf doesnt like this as much as I do.. And I also want to keep it to look good if you know what I mean :)
ANd I also want to be able to turn on 1 computer only if I want to access the internet. Without having 1 online allways and make a fan sound. That why it would be so great to have it all in a fanless lil router box :) But I guess there is no router that would give me even close to 100 then? Anyone know what kind of speed you can get with a good router ? are we talking 2mb or 70mb/s ?

Thanks once more!

I just found http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=371&#DGL-4100
Anyone know about this router?
It says it has 1 wan port that support 10/100 and 4 giga ports.
But what kind of speed would this wan port give me ?

I have been eyeing out the DGL-4300 (one step up model) of that router, it seems like a very nice router :) the wireless still wont be at 100mbps but the ports are gigbit, So you can do very fast transfers within the LAN.

O and how on EARTH do you get 100 MEGA BIT PER SECOND internet connection for only $75??? I have a feeling your getting mixed up between monthly bandwith and speed.

Is the DGL -4300 avaible already ?
Is it better than the 4100 in some cases ?

I had 100mbit/s for $20/month and will pay around $75 for 100mbit/s when I get it again. Got 10mbit/s now From bredbandsbolaget.com for example.

Yes, the DGL-4300 is available now. The diffrence between the 4300 and the 4100 is that the 4100 IS NOT WIRELESS.

The DGL series seem to be pretty marked up so I would go with a diffrent router with either "MIMO" or 108mbps transfer rate

But you say I should go for another router with MIMO or 108mbps ?
This router does support 108mbps

so what do you mean with this ?

I do wounder if I would get more speed out of this new 4300 on radio vs my old d-link 804 wired ?

Thanks!
