Hey I'm considering upgrading to a Geforce2 GTS-V from my venerable TNT. However my TNT has really sh1tty 2d quality. It's kinda fuzzy and above 1024x768 its so bad its unusable. Did Nvidia do anything to improve 2d visual quality in thier newer cards? I have a nice monitor, and I'd like a card that can do it justice? So what do you guys think: get a GF2 GTS-V for speed or start looking for a good deal on Radeon LE?

even the newer gf2 have really crappy 2d

look for a radeon if you want your 2d quality

I've got a geforce 2mx. I consider the 2d quality to be acceptable. Not great, but acceptable. From what I've heard Matrox is still the clear leader in 2d quality. Of course the concensus is that they suck at 3d speed. Radeon may be a good compromise

hmmm.....its acceptable, but if you want the best overall card get the LE, for 51 bucks it aint bad at all, and its got lots of tweaking you can do.....the gts-v and the LE(once hypers-z is unlcoked) should have about the same 3D performance(1152x768x32)....

Ya I'd agree with most of that.

But I own both a Matrox and Radeon card and they are pretty even in terms of 2d. At 1600x1200, I might give a teeny nodge to the Matrox. 3D is a different story altogether though, the Matrox can do Direct3D Counter-strike, nothing newer.

My Asus GF3 V8200 deluxe has poor 2D visual quality. 1280x1024 is already too bad. With Radeon VE I can use that with same monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 950p 19"). on lower resolutions picture is good. (I've had previously also riva 128, TNT2 TVR and GeForce2 - guess that same applies to them)

So if 2D quality in high resolutions is important it is better to skip nVidia cards.

The problem may be associated to the video filter used on the boards. It's a small series of resistors and capacitors used to reduce noise interferences. Should work OK, but badly implemented filters can blurr things up, and even if a good filter is used, it's image quality is never as good as not using a filter at all.

My old Egoforce TNT2 M64 was so cheap that it didn't feature a video filter, the 2d quality was really good even at 1024x768.

Recently I bought a Pine GF2 MX200 and it does feature a filter, but it's sooo crappy that my old M64's 2d quality was WAY better. The MX's 2d is so blurry that it gives me headaches.

I don't remember where, but there is a article on the net that shows how to remove the video filter. It's essentially a solder job, and not very dificult to do. I have NOT DONE IT to my board yet, cause I didn't have much spare time lately and I don't intend to do it on a hurry and ruin my board because of a stupid mistake. So, I can't say that it's the right choice, but I'm quite certain that my M64's quality is better because of the inexisting filters.

2D quality on any Geforce card can be very good with some basic tweaks, though these cards are geared towards blazing 3d quality, you can get very sharp true colors from them if you're willing to spend a bit of time calibrating that aspect. Yes the ATI and MAtrox do have better 2d out of the box, but this gap can be narrowed with simple shareware monitor utilities online to the point where u cant tell the difference between any card. You can probalby even improve drastically the 2d image of the ol TNT Riva card also!:D

hmmm.....do you have any online guides that help with this...or tell me what options to fix...cuz my geforce2pro is quite fuzzy.....

First off, what monitor are you using, calibration utilities work great, but to direct you in the right direction tell me your monitor model#.

its a compaq V75 monitor.....

3D Colorific would work just fine for that monitor, its a common shareware program by now I would think.
