Looking to slap a Blue Orb onto my 64 DDR vivo, anyone got one on their card? If so could you post some pix and fill me in on the process please.

Ill fill you in on the process now. I'll put up pics when I get home.
Take off the stock HSF. Either get it real hot or real cold and twist it off.
Take that orb and look at it. See those little tabs with the holes in them, those are for mounting it on a GFarce. Take your dremel and cut them off. You dont need them and they will just be in the way.
Ever lap a heatsink? You're going to learn really quick because you need to lap the snot outta the orb to get it any where near flat. No more pasty little geek arms for you....this is a workout.
Once you get that done, clean the thermal crap off the GPU with some acetone, nail polish remover, alcohol, something of that evaporative nature.
Cover the GPU with the thermal paste of your choice. Preferable ASII. Cover all of the chip except the corners. Put it on a tad thicker than you would on a CPU HSF. Put a dab of superglue on each corner of the GPU, use the gel stuff if you can get it. Hold it really really tight and dont move it for about 15 minutes. (This should be easy to do because you now have Arnold arms from lapping it to begin with)
Make sure that the heatsink doesnt touch any components on the card, make sure the ASII doesn't smoosh out the sides of the HSF because it is slightly conductive and can kill your GPU if it shorts anything.
You're pretty much done.

Kingslayer I will have questions, any other fan/heatsink you can recommend that may avoid the lapping, last bit of lapping I did was my fop32 whn I had on my BE6-II mobo, what grit paper do I use again to start and finish?
cisco Kid:)
Start w/ 600 wet/dry, then 800 wet/dry, then (if you have a lot of energy) 1000 wet/dry. Do it w/ the paper wet though, you'll get a better cut.

I am looking forward to buffing hehehehe, gonna add muscle to my already nicely sized pipes.......
Waiting for pics from any that have a blue orb on their 64 ddr vivo. next best suggestion for copper ramsinks to help cool the ram and add to the look...
third best to game and get the card hot to remove heatsink fan or use the freezer trick. I understand the the heatsink is just held on by glue, correct??
Cisco Kid:D
Your Radeon won't need RAM sinks. The RAM runs cool enough.

Don't start with 600 to lap a Blue orb....why punish yourself? Start with something like 200 or 400. If you dont, youre going to be there for ever. If you have any questions fire away.

Kingslayer,
Could you post some pix please. Yep I will have questions , gonna start process this weekend.
Thanks for your feedback, and the sandpaper you recommend to start 200 then 400 , 600 800 and finish with 1000 wet/dry?

Sorry I didnt post some pics, I forgot. I have been playing with my XP machine for the past 3 days and haven't even touched my main rig.
For some reason XP won't hold my password to this place and I can't post anything.

Wow,
That card looks awesome, where do I get those ramsinks, if ya got a link I would love to see it. Some say the radeon does not need it but I wanna see if I can get mine up to 255/250. I believe it will do it cause I am now at 222.75/222.75
So do I need to alter the orb to fit on the card in any way, once I have lapped it. To ensure that I have lapped it flat , just check to see if it sits flat an a flat surface?
I am surprised with the extra cooling that you are stuck at 220/220, what is the card default??

Card default is 183 on this one.
To check to make sure it is flat, I take a razor blade and hold acrss it and see if it touches the entire way across the heatsink.
Those RAM sinks are from the Thermaltake memory kit. I would get two of those kits in order to cover boths sides of the Radeon like I did.

Got a Canadian link by chance for the thermaltake memory kit, harder to find distributor for this stuff in Canada... and thanks for your help, buying the orb today....
will fill ya in on the process

Kingslayer,
the pic you posted of your radeon with the Blue Orb on sjows the tabs still on the card, I am trying to figure out what you are saying to cut off with dremel??

I didn't cut mine off and I had to posistion the it different than how I could have with the tabs on. Cut them off, you dont need them and they look like snot sitting there.
Look at the picture. I wanted to rotate the orb about 20 degrees clockwise so the wire came off the card perpendicular to the card edge. But the tabs would have hit the one ram sink and the resistors to the left of the card.

Kingslayer I am trying to motivate myself to do the same thing to my card as you did with yours. I am looking forward to your new overclock since the bios flash.
Also what are your thoughts on thermal tape between the gpu and Blue orb heatsink vs Arctic Silver thermal paste only cause I am a bit paranoid of frying the card.
Cisco Kid:cool:
How did you put that card on?
There seems to be no clips..

Yodums,
He used ASII on the gpu core and then a drop of suoer glue in each corner of the blue orb. Clips are not needed

This is strange. I put in the bios flash and did some tests. Look on Jons initial post about this flash for an update.

Yep, gotta lap the crap otta those Blorbs! Just got mine today and whew is my arm tired! (Can't believe how otta whack those things are.) Of corse all I had laying around was 600, 800, 1000, 1500. Really wished I'd had some 200-400 to start with. Anyway, lapped till my arm fell off, put on the AS-II, three drops of superglue, one on any of the three corners of the GPU and yer done! Simple as that. One BIG note of caution: be careful when removing the stock h/s. I broke off one of the resistors by the lower right hand corner of the GPU. Talk about dropping a load! All I can say is thank god someone invented superglue. Grabbed the tweezers, put in place, two drops of superglue and blam! Back in business. Overclocked to the limit. 150/360. Can't say its stable cause I did all this at lunch today. However, it did run 3d2k with no prob's. Scored 6193 with old 11.01 drivers. I'll goof around with it tonight and see what I get with the newer drivers.
