Does anyone know how to do this? I mean, is it even really possible? I am asking because I had heard rumors that Celeron processors were locked and cannot be overclocked at all.

For those who have helped me earlier this year, My PC is up and running, but suffered some data corruption thanks to a bum psu, which was quickly replaced, but it is coming to be something so much greater than I ever expected. I am soon replacing my current mobo (ripped from a dell dimension 2300) and upgrading my PCI XFX Geforce FX 5200 128 MB video card to a Chaintech Geforce 6600 256 MB video card. Also I have already been to my first LAN party, which took place October 29th, a day after my 20th birthday. To all of you that helped me with my PC last time, thank you very much.

With the right motherboard, yes a 2.2 Celeron can be overclocked. You heard correctly, your CPU has a locked multiplier that can't be changed, but if you have a motherboard that has adjustable FSB, voltages, PCI lock, and memory settings, then you are all set to overclock. Look at Abit or Asus socket 478 motherboards with an Intel 865/875 chipset.

they do quite wel lactually, with the low ammount of L2 it dosent heat up as much thus more mhz :)

Also, im curious, exactly how high could i make my Celeron go? for the record I have a 500 watt psu so power isnt an issue. Also, My PC is like a windtunnel due to the high amount of air going in and out of it at any given time so its pretty much well cooled

It depends a lot on the stepping version. The newer the CPU, the more likely it has the best yielding core. Back a couple years ago when I played with a 2.2 Celeron, I hit 2.8 gig with it. Some might go 3 gig or more. It's the luck of the draw.

interesting, thanks again batboy

Would Lathing, sanding, and smoothing the CPU help take that clockspeed any higher?

Probaly not, unless your temp are outrages. But with a northwood if it wase I would check your HSF and make sure it was attached right.

I had a 2.4 that I OC'ed to 2.75 with temp only 45/47C.

lapping a cpu is a fairly advanced technique used when you are really squeezing the absolute last few mhz out of a cpu. typically at this level getting proper hardware and arming yourself with knowledge and experience will give you a better result than skipping straight to the pro tactics. :)

good luck with your system.
