Hi guys, this is only my second post around here, so please bear with me. Also I have tried searching for a problem like mine, but all differ slightly.

I want to install win2k on a brand new maxtor 160 gig ide, but just after all drivers are loaded, then I get this "Inaccessible boot device" error. The hdd is plugged into primary ide as master and dvd writer as master on secondary ide can anybody help me with this? All the components are brand new, but could maybe the harddrive/ide ports be faulty? Also I tried to install xp last night and it also stopped at the BSoD with some message about corruption and something about improper shutdown. To make matters worse I don't have a stiffy drive so can't fdisk (gonna try usb later on tonight). Someone told me that atapi.sys might be the problem

I'm using an Asus P5WD2 Premium.

Can anyone please help me, as I'm no expert with these kinda things.

Regards

Welcome to the Forums!

If this error arrears just after the loading of drivers, are you sure that you have the correct drivers? Normally, an error like this will occur due to incorrect chipset or controller drivers. I've checked the Asus site and the drivers links for the board apprear to be down currently, but should be up later.

You should try running the HDD diagnostics from the drive manufacturer as well. This should be able to isolate any HDD or channel problems.

Since it's W2K, is your disk SATA? If so, did you hit F6 and load SCSI/RAID drivers from the FDD during install? This can also cause the error. There are ways to slipstream the drivers into the OS install media if you do not have access to a FDD.

Hope this helps.
