View Full Version : Laptop cooling platform...

I've got an old box for an 8" subwoofer from an ancient home theatre setup. The box has an 8" hole for the sub, as well as a large square cut out on an adjacent side where the built in amp controls went. I'm thinking of mounting 4x 80mm fans in this square, flush with the wood to sit my laptop on. The fans would be sucking hot air from the bottom of the laptop. I would then mount a 120mm fan in the 8" hole as an exhaust, to expel the hot air in the box. Would this keep my laptop sufficiently cool? Of course, this isn't meant to be a mobile thing, it will be sitting beside my bed on the ground. perfect height for ease of use.
As for the fan issues, how would I go about powering all of these fans? Could I use an old PSUand mount it inside the box, and just run the fans off of it? I know there's a way to jump start a psu, but not sure how... touch green and black wires? Could I just rig up a toggle/momentary switch to do this?

i don't see any reason that wouldn't work.
to jump start a PSU you want to short the green wire to the black or grey wire on the 20-pin connector. if you have no other plans for the psu you could make things easier by cutting the respective wires (after testing) and solder them to a SPDT switch

I heard that the PSU needs some kind of moniter that the motherboard takes care of. Its used for voltage monitering and such.

it's possible i suppose, but since it's an older PSU (and probably not the best quality either) it's unlikely that it has those features
for power, see if you can find an old AT power supply (should be pretty easy and cheap). Those had their own power switch, and did not rely on the mothermoard to power up.
Yes you can do exactly what you want to do. Yes it is the green and any black wire from the psu to start it. And lastly, yes you can use a single pole switch to start/stop it.
Another idea to add, you can add a 110volt outlet in to the box too so you can power your lappy and the psu from a longer cord to the wall. Just use a 12 gage extension cord (usually the round types are the heavier gage wire) cut off the female end and wire to the outlet.
Just a thought.

i beleive that monitor that the PSU needs from teh mobo is to keep the 3.3V rail stable...
for all psus that i've modified. Al lyou need to do is cut the black and green wire on hte 20 pin cable and then short them. Or you can splcie them together. When you flip the switch it will work.

you can even get cords that have jsut he male end and bare wire on the other so it requires less chopping. goten several just from sears for reworking some Arcade cabinets I have.
