5.1 sound system

I have currently have a 2.1 system and i have a inspiron 6000 with SigmaTel C-Major Audio I was messing around in the sound device properties and i can set speaker settings to 5.1 and 7.1 but will it really support 5.1? thanks

2.1 speakers can't support 5.1 or 7.1, no.

I guess I might have wrote it a little confusing...but what I am asking will my computer support 5.1 I am going to buy new speakers to replace the old ones...got me? thanks for the help anyway scott

So is it not possible to get full function out of a 5.1 surround sound system without buying and pcmia soundcard? thanks

You need a 5.1 set of speakers.

If you mean your sound card, how many output channels does it have?

Yea i know i need a 5.1 system im saying im going to buy them if it will work....but i dont want to pay for the audigy2zs right now....it only has one audio port..

Is it possible to get 5.1 sound out of a USB adapter? There was a Philips adapter on Amazon claiming this a while back for $30.
