IM a total fan of IE and refuse to use anything else but after getting the new aim triton (new version of aim) the other day I noticed a little icon on the desktop that said AOL internet browser. SO i started using it and it simply blows IE out of the playing field. Even firefox cant compare to this browser.
Just start using it and youll see all the nifty features.
1. Imports automatically all favorites and history and puts them on this awesome side panel that works soooo well.
2. Tabbed browsing that works good. PLus like a MAC feature when u hold the mouse over the tab a little picture of the current page gets displayed so u can see it!!! Awesome!!!!!
3 I like the loading bar incorporated into the address bar, another mac rip-off but its just better to me.
And 4 the best feature ever !!!!! Hold the mouse over the back button and all previous websites are displayed and LITTLE PICTURES OF THEM TOO!!!!!!!
Im sold. It took me alot to switch and i hate all aol products but this one is a keeper that im going to play with for a while. Its just gonna take a while to start getting used to click that icon instead of that DAMM E!!
I've used a large variety of web browsers, including: Opera, Dillo, Mozilla, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, Galeon, K-Meleon, Internet Explorer, and I even tried that AOL Browser. To be honest, I wasn't even impressed by the AOL Browser. It reminds me of a scaled down Netscape, that has a look simliar to IE, and I don't like IE.

well i wasnt impressed with any mozilla product to date. And there pretty much the only other browser that ive ever tried. SO this is a change to me that is pretty different in a good way and im sticking with it.
Out of all the browsers I've tried, I hate IE the most, followed by the AOL browser. =p
So I guess people have very different taste.
My favorites are mozilla firefox and epiphany. Dillo is VERY fast, but doesn't render stuff well. Still, it's very nice on old/slow machines.

I love IE, I guess it's just me. lol
Does aol's browser still compress pictures for faster loading?

I generally don't like any web browser that comes installed with a separate program
i surprised you havent been crucified for saying you like something AOL related on a computer enthusiast board

Yeah...seriously. I am sure AOL doesn't need to bundle a browser with its' IM client just to get it out, distributed, and used... :sn:
basically, it sounds like you like the little pictures of pages.

AOL is part of Time Warner, so it would make sense that the browser be graphics heavy and incorporate those kind of features. If you like that fine, but even given all of Firefox's current faults I still don't see a single feature that would make Aol a better browser that you've mentioned Chris.

He, any other browsers that would run on and old/slow Windows 98 machine besides Dillo?

Hey guys im not talking about the aol browser that comes in every mailbox, this is a seperate browser bundled with Aim.
But whatever i just thougth it was pretty cool and wanted to mention it. IE gets pretty boring and its like been the same for years and lacks alot of newer features.

Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla, K-Meleon, Opera, etc; they should all work on Windows 98. I know for a fact that the first four do.

I understand what you mean by the browser. When you install the latest AIM or AIM Triton, it installs the AOL Browser, which is just a scaled down piece of crap. It is slower than Internet Explorer, and I hate Internet Explorer. Just for everyone who doesn't know what browser we are talking about, here is a screenshot...

Everything that you mentioned is included in Opera except for the little images when you hover over something. I do not see any use for this because it will obscure the view of other things on the page. Title bars exist for this reason which serve their purpose very well.
What kind of memory usage does this AOL browser have?

Sorry, let me rephrase my question, though K-Meleon woudl more or less fit the bill. Are there any other browsers out their besides Dillo that are small, fast, and extremely light on resource use. All of those browser work with Windows 98 of course, and a host more, but I'm looking for the most efficient ones for the platform. Thanks anyway.

Okay, I dug out some of my saved information today, and I found three web browsers that might be good for you. They are not as tiny and compact as Dillo, but they have an interface like that of Firefox, and are pretty fast themselves. These include, the Avant Browser, Maxthon Browser, and the Slim Browser. Shown below are pictures of the other browsers...

Before I read this post I thought you were being sarcastic. IE and AOL are the worst browsers, IMO. Nothing beats Opera. ;)

Ah yes, I've heard of these. Actually used the first too, though stopped using them because I was wary of the fact that they're both IE extension browsers though that was a year ago and very much have have changed since then. Never tried Slimbrowser, although some people swear by it. Anyone have experiences with it or with any of these browsers?
dude, its AOL!!! come on now.. go to spywarekills.com and get MYIE2, idk if you've heard of it or not its seriously the best browser IMO EVER!!!!! i'm hooked and i give it to everyone i know, you have to be a little techy because of the tabbed browsing.. when a popup comes up for example, it comes in another tab, not an actual window, small things like that. but everyone deserves to give it a shot. its called MYIE2

Personally, it wouldn't be my number one choice for a web browser, because I use other misc. ones, however, I do recommend it to people running computers that need to save RAM. Therefore, if you do end up trying it, and need help, I will be here. :D

My thoughts exactly since the first time I saw this thread. Brave move, chris64. Your bravery possibly offsets your using an AOL browser.

That is partially true. When I see someone mention a browser on the forum and say something positive I usually like to give it a run to see what it's like. However, since it has the "aol" name in front of it I will not try it. This is because we are all well aware of their absolutely awful internet service as well as their IM service that uses a hefty amount of resources with the addition of ads that are quite intrusive.
I do realize that companies with bad reputations do good things sometimes and if I didn't have a good browser I would consider trying this out. However, there are so many alternatives that do all the things you mentioned (except display pictures when you hover over tabs and such. This feature sounds nifty but I would probably disable it after the first week because I prefer just glancing at the favicon or title bar).

Dillo doesn't run in windows atm, it only works on unix platforms. There are a lot more browser options for linux than there are for windows (mozilla, mozilla firefox, netscape, epiphany, dillo, konqueror, opera, w3, links, galeon, netrik, skipstone, etc.). As for the fastest windows based browser, I'd say either firefox or ie. Nothing for windows is really in the same league as dillo for pure speed, but that speed is not without tradeoffs. A lot of pages look really crappy on dillo still. Hopefully that will change with time.
i hate AOL full stop dunno why i just do :p

My friend uses the AOL browser. Personally I hate it, tries to take over everything. Anyway thats just my opinion, glad you found one you like.
I've been playing with it, and as far as I can tell it is a skin over IE. Click on the connection settings in preferences and it brings up IE settings. There is a tick box in preferences to enable/disable active x (totaly IE) It imports your IE bookmarks, the bookmark manager is a joke, you can only import AOL favorites - huh? Oh yes it has 'tabbed' browsing. It takes 23mb of memory on a blank home page, IE is 13mb, and when you you launch the AOL browser it also launches a process 'aolsoftware.exe' which takes 9mb of memory and if you quit the AOL browser, the aolsoftware.exe is still running.
AOL browser - NO thanks
-edit
forgot to add that when you launch the browser, it loads the aim icon in the systray - not right away

Whats really nuts is what all comes with that new Trition AIM....check your processes list after its all installed and running...
Its a system hog, and thats putting it lightly...a grinning wolf. That new AIM, with its lovely browser, is almost as bad as a darn virus.
Try uninstalling it. I did. Funny how parts of it are still there...and RUNNING.
Spending 45 minutes hand picking it out of my registry was glorious to say the least. It spreads its fingers far and wide in there...wait and see!
You can still get AIM 5.9 btw, and I would strongly recommend using it instead.
Anythings that secretly installs itself, and is UNREMOVABLE, is spyware/virus to me. MSConfig cannot remove the programs that it starts, btw, nor can you remove them from the registry through the Run folders. It simply isnt there to remove. This description sounds familiar, eh?
Sounds like virus.
AOL sucks, has sucked in the past, and continues its legacy. Period.
Take care everyone, and be wary of Trition

are/virus to me.
FYI, the new AIM Triton is NOT secure. You can easily get viruses and/or spyware from using it, so you may want to download a previous version of AIM from the BuddyProfile site.

I have seen people use it and its not for me. I like opera, after opera I like mozilla. I have used Konquerer but since I dont usually run linux that is not viable option.
The mian reason I won't try it is knowing how much stuff all the other aol programs have they seem to be system hogs
And we do try to have intelligent discussion without just completly throwing something out the window do to its name
I don't know if anyone had a problem with it like I had, last week I did a fresh install of windows, and since my brother is staying home instead of going to work he is on the computer a lot more, so last week just three days after the fresh install he installed aim triton crap, as you would expect he answered yes for every damn thing the installer wanted to intall, at first I just stopped aim from starting at boot and got rid of the IE toolbar, but the strangest thing was that I wasn't able to load a Battlefield 2 map anymore, and I could only guess it was because of aim since it was the only thing that had changed since the day before, after I lot of unistall i had to do a restore to the day I had done the fresh install and then reinstall some of the stuff to get BF2 working again.
To each his own. I can't stand AOL. I have always found their software to be riddled with bugs.

You know chris, under normal circumstances I would agree with you, but the post is misleading at least in my opinion, which makes open and warranted lambasting of the browser absolutely warranted. I for one rather not have a spew of Triton error/ problems up on the forum for us all to deal with if I can help it. The browser is about as worthy a browser as Gator is for form filling and to my mind you haven't brought up a single argument to the contrast, while the rest of us have brought up innumerable ones.
