Hello
Currently I have
Server for file share , active directory , and terminal service
Operating system = Windows 2003 Enterprise server
2.8gig P4 EMT 64 Smithfield
2 gig DDR2 512 OCZ ram
2x 250 Sata2 on Mirror raid
Abit AL8
10/100/100 Netgear Gigabit adaptor
All drivers and OS updated
2 client machines that match as follows
Operating systems = Windows XP Pro sp2 updated
2.8gig P4 EMT 64 Smithfield
2 gig DDR2 512 OCZ ram
1 80gig Sata2
Abit AW8-MAX
Onboard 10/100/1000 Gigalan Realtek
All drivers and OS updated
Router = D-link Gamer lounge DGL-4300 @ 10/100/1000
Switch = Netgear Gs605 @ 10/100/1000
Cable = Cat5
Ok basicly my problem atm with all this I can only get 5% data transfer. I dont expect a full 100% out of a gigalan setup but 5% is a little annoying to deal with lol :bang head . I have searched for 3 days and all I can really find is that im not alone with this issue but nothing I found so far had any answers. Anyone with a suggestion? Maby point me in the right direction? Thanks aton :)

Are your router and switch correctly connected?
Can you get good connectivity directly without using one (just using one of the PCs?)
Where are you measuring the 5% network capability?
er...wait, this is just file transfer intranetwork? Yeah, router + switch must be hooked up correctly plus best firmware updated :)
Thats all I got! Good luck! (nice setups too...!!)

The router is connected in the same room as the server. The router then send out 4 lines to other rooms. The office has 2 computers so 1 line in and then they are connected to the switch. Firmwear is up to date. As for correct hoopup .. AS far was WAN and LINK I didnt think there was alot that can go wrong on the plugging wires in to ports 1 threw 6 ?? If so please educate me.

this is going to sound really stupid but i've had this before. some computers were REALLY slow accessing the network, all it was in the end was the workstations on XP had the file and printer sharing unticked in the windows firewall.
make sure you use the connect wizard as its VERY good with the windows server series.
all you do is open your internet browser and type servername/connectcomputer (so for example for me it would be http://gorillyserve/connectcomputer)
also remember to map drivers etc... if you map a drive then windows will look it up on start up... not wait untill you want it.
i would also suggest getting one more SATA drive and having RAID 5 as for reading its fast and writing its still fairly quick

oh and by the way are you looking at the network useage in taskmanager?
don't rely on it as it doesnt mean all that much... you will never see it hit 100%...

Yea I was looking at the task manager. All and all though it is very slow in fact the same speeds can be beat with an everyday 10/100. I did check file shar and go threw server settings with a fine tooth comb and everything is in check. I found no error codes or anything causing a timeout. I get the fealing that there is something simple I need to look at... One checkbox somewhere I have never look .. Somehting small and waiting to be clicked.... Arggg :bang head
Minimum cable requirements for gigabit is cat5e, preferably cat6, I wouldn't use cat5.

Actually that was missinformation on my part. I wired everything with Cat5e . lol sorry about that

net monitory shows and average of 6.45mb sec tansfer rate. Peak at 7.44mb... :mad: thats just rude
Here are some things to try,,
Install QOS on all pc's
Pin all the nics manually to 1gig full duplex instead of autodetect

can you try conecting the server with a workstation directly with a cat5e crossover cable and see if that helps? if so the problem lies in the router / switch.

QOS is installed on all pc's allthough pining all the nics to 1 gig migth be a good idea. I think ill take four4875's suggestion as well and try pinning one PC and server direct with one line and have them set to 1 gig... Should see something that way. Then I can prob tell if its a fault with the line or narrow the problem down atleast. Thanks :)
