k i'm looking to buy a whole new computer and am wondering whats the best intel dual core chip for overclocking
what i mean is, is there a certin chip name or number that gives the best overclocking results or would any one do
i hope to cool it with a vapochill so as to reach the max overclock
any help would be great
As far as I know, all the Pentium D have the same stepping. If you are getting a motherboard that does well with high FSB like the Asus P5WD2, then just get the 820 with the lowest multiplier for the best performance.

wait a little bit and get a 900 series cpu, codenamed presler. they have twice the cache, are on a 65nm process instead of 90nm, and are a true dual core.

yes definately wait because preliminary results show that 900 series can easily overclock to 4gig+ where as at the moment i can only get 3.6 max on air and that seems to be the norm on air for the 800 series

ya wait how long?
my main rig just went down on me yesterday, damm thing won't post am hoping a few quick fixes will get it running again, so i'm entertaining the idea of a new one
dont really wanna wait past january
it worth it to go dual core or save the money on the single cores?
cooling will be on water at first till i can save for a mach II
the money is starting to burn a hole in my pocket so dunno how long i can hold out lol

Get a 920, it will come out in 2 weeks. 920 will be incredible cpu with 2x2mb cache, plus it run cooler then a 820, it will overclock more, it will have VT, what you wannt more ? Just try to wait this 2/3 weeks...

Wait!!! I know money burns holes in pockets but at the moment it's just not worth it. Acording to the INQ ( http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28074 ) Dec. 27th is how long you should have to wait, give a week or so and i think it would be well worth it to get twice the cache and lower temps.

that means a diff motherboard to right?
is it really worth an extra say $500 more for a 920?
the 640's price will be reduced when the 920 comes out so is it really worth the extra money?
it may be burning a hole in my pocket but i only got so much

As far as I know, all the Pentium D have the same stepping.
According to intel step finder, there are some B0 steppings out now.

I am almost positive that 900 serious will work on 955X chipset. Someone over on extremesystems has a post going about running a presely extreme edition ES on the asus board everyone likes.

Wasn't it a 955XE board? I'm not sure, but it'll be great if a 900 series worked on a 955X chipset. Can anyone confirm?

not 100% sure but: http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=2946
However, the current chipsets like 945 and 955X will not be able to support Pentium XE "Presler" but will work with Pentium D "Presler".

955XE is a cpu not a chipset
presler will work fine on i955x, it was reported that the extreme editions (XE) wouldn't work with i955x but the guy at xs proved that wrong
I read that post also. It should work unless they make a change where the non es chips won't work with the i955x boards.

any help would be greatIf you plan on using a vapo I'd wait for the 9xx serials duals also. The 8xx series put out a lot of heat and from what I've seen stress standard phase cooling.

any vapo or mach II would be the top unit think rated to 180 watts or above, the 8xxx put out more then that?

are the 9xx chips going to have hyperthreading or is just the extreme edition like the 8xx series?
any vapo or mach II would be the top unit think rated to 180 watts or above, the 8xxx put out more then that?I can't find the tread that talked about phase on the 8xxd but from what I recall he did have it o/c'd but was relatively stressing the cooling. The temps were a lot higher, somewhere around 10C. You could always change out the gas and put a Chilly1 evap on it.
The 8xx's put out about 135 watts non o/c'd.
are the 9xx chips going to have hyperthreading or is just the extreme edition like the 8xx series?Just the extreme edition.

Definitely wait on the Pressler man. It's gonna be worth it, and it really shouldn't cost you but maybe 100 more. It will cost a little bit more for the mobo, and the other components maybe, but the CPU should be about the same price as current CPU's are costing now.
They will run cooler, and will run on lower voltages. This is good, because that means more OC'ing headroom. If you want a max OC, definitely wait, or I can promise that you will shoot yourself when all the reports start coming in from all the fine folks here.
The ES CPU's have already OC'd to high levels (4.5GHz+) on stock voltage! Try THAT with one of the current generation CPU's...well, actually, don't try that, because they won't do it. Release CPU's are always better than the ES chips because they've been refined, and are manuafactured to tighter standards.
If you wait, and get the better 975x board, and the better CPU, you will get better OC's, and higher performance.
