View Full Version : Low consumption but loud speakers?

I was just wondering if anybody was aware of any powerful but low electricity consumption speakers (or longer term of any upcoming speaker technologies) that would be suitable for running a medium size outdoor party (so noise is more of a priority than sound quality) from a small generator or even caravan batteries. This relates to a discussion I was having with some people about the continuing viability of outdoor free parties in light of rising fuel costs (possibly rising massively within the not too distant future). Alternatively can anybody think of cheap and simple alternative methods of power generation (other than stealing a fuel cell from GE).
energy cannot be created nor destroyed. to get lots of power out, you need to put lots of power in. some designs may be more efficient (less energy wasted), but i don't think the differences will be too significant.

Only thing I can think of would be to use class D amps as they're more efficient.

use as efficient of amps as you can find and stuff, and use solar charged batteries to power it, best i can think of for low cost. can also hook in a generator to charge it when there isnt any sun to do solar. could also set up some kind of wind generator but it seems unlikely t charge the batteries and power the stuff well. basically look into alternativ energy sources, theres sun wind and water pretty much (and generator) or you could make some kind of exercise bike generator haha... but you have to put in at least every bit of work to be done by the stuff, so it could get very tiring. but solar and batteries, then generator when batteries are dead is all i can think of. however you power the generator is up to you, could be a gas motor, people turnin ranks / pedals, whatever works. just need to get the physical energy to turn to electrical.
and a good way to lower power consumption is to just turn it down. it sucks, but the louder it gets is the more power it takes to get any louder, so by turning it down by a small audible ammount may save a fair bit of power. prolly have to play with it with ammeters running and stuff to see changes in draw.
Honestly the best way is to just plug it into a house. Plain and simple. Find somebody with DJ equipment, or a similair setup. Power = Sound, your really not going to get too far from that.
If you run off batteries, the batteries will need to be charged/recharged by either a car wasting gas, or more likely a home battery charger. Both of which are inefficient.
might wanna pickup some of these babies http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=426623
