I just ordered a celeron 900 dirt cheap and was wondering if there is any real overclocking difference between the oem and the retail.
It seems to me that right after Intel releases a chip, they sort them by quality- with the best ones going into the "retail" packaging. After the chip has been out for a while, Intel has gotten their manufacturing plants up to snuff, and there no longer is a difference.
For example, I got a couple Celeron 566s right after they came out, one retail one OEM. The retail got upto 975, the OEM did a dismal 705mhz. 6 months later I got another OEM 566, and it does 995 no problem.
Nowadays if money is tight and chip has been out for a while, I get the OEM version. But most of the time I get retail chips- they aren't much more, usually only $10 more or so, plus you get an extra heatsink to use!:)

also
OEM = 30 day warenty
Retail = 3 year + heatsink (sucks for a CPU but great for GPU)
The Myth states Retail CPU's are bettr OC'er... And since Overclocking is like VooDoo magic....
A while back, it seemed that retail CPUs did overclock better. One theory was that venders were pretesting the OEM chips and selling the ones that overclocked better for a premium price. However, I don't think that happens as much anymore. Like others already said, the retail CPUs have a much better warranty and comes with a heatsink and fan that will work on a video card or your uncle's computer that never gets overclocked or something like that. Personally, I'd spend a few extra bucks and get the sealed box retail CPU.
Some places now give ya a free HSF with your OEM chips, where I got my crap cheapo celeron 733 from, they gave me a decent lookin lil cooler from 'akasa' which was better than intel's affair... but i sold it to a m8 and banged my ol' pep66 on the celeron and it's runnin @ 1100 :) The old retail is better for OCing is pretty much history now IMO. It DEFINITELY counted in the C300a days tho... mm i miss my old SL32A retail C300, did 504 with std heatsink :)
