Well after what seems like forever I am Finlay giving up my old 56k modem (I shall miss it). Any way I am currently running two systems in the house and as the isp I choose only sent me one ethernet cable I am only able to hook one system up. I am getting a router so I can hook both up, but was wondering if the ethernet cable has to be a certain kind (If there are certain types that is) in order to function. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

nope. just get a straight through ethernet cable for hookinga computer to a router. if you wanted to hook 2 comps together you would need a crossover cable, but you're fine with a straight one.

If you are buying a router and can afford it, I would buy a wireless router and wireless nics.It would skip most of the wiring and 99 percent of the mess.

Any plain cat5e or cat6 cables should do fine. There are some people that make them and sell, it's under the "Services" section in the Classifieds, looks like their really good quality at the lowest price you can find.

Yeah, the wireless would solve all the mess, but depends on how close they are.

Thanks for the feedback all of you. I was considering wireless but figured I would just go ahead and wire it up. Again, thanks for the replies

Correct and if you want to transfer large files around, wireless can't touch the thoroughput of a wired network. If you want a good solid lan with no interference problems I find wired the way to go.

i run wired and wireless :D wired for the permanent installed comps and the wireless for when i take the laptop o the kithcen or living room or wherever i decide to go.

the cables offered in the classifieds ar ehand made, individually tested with REAL throughput of data, not just with a little continuity tester, and are of grea quality. I reccomend them, they're so much cheaper than at say bestbuy for the same thing.

And wired is faster.
