Just a quick question. What exactly is the point of a bong and how does it work?

A bong is an evaporative cooler. It's purpose in life is to... well... cool.... Basically (If I understand right) you run water through a waterblock like in a normal watercooling setup, but then instead of a radiator, you have the water fall a few feet through the air, and as it does this, it looses heat. Its a cool way to cool (pun intended!), but you tend to loose water quickly....

yeah, you dispense the water back in the resevior (bong), by using a showerhead or soemthing, thus, increasing the water's surface area, and allowing it to cool VERY quickly. by spraying itout like this, you can cool it off almost immediately, and VERY effectively.

So basically its watercooling without a radiator?

It's a form of radiator.

There are several good articles under the 'watercooling' section on the main page.

Quick simple version:
When water evaporates the hottest molecules jump from the liquid to a gas and float away. This leaves only the cool water molecules, greatly reducing the average temperature. What a bong does is spread the water out so it is easier for the hottest and hotter molecules to float away.
Does that help explain how they work?

Don't give up on an idea just because you don't understand it at first. Keep digging and check out the article ridenow linked to.

I don't think that it's so difficult a concept, but if you want someone could spell it out.

BTW, If I hear that "cool" pun one more time, I'm going to go nuts. Anyone else concur?

bongs can get water temps a few degrees below ambient which is very ood for cooling where radiators will never go below ambient

Ever notice on top of older building the big square thing with water running thru it and air blowing out. Same thing just a real big one. You might never have payed much attention unless you had to work on one though. But take a look they are used a lot.
