I'm thinking about getting XP but I'm a little concerned about the spyware aspects of it that everyone seems to be talking about. Why doesn't everyone think its spyware? What kind of information does it reveal to MS?

I installed xp and if it was'nt for the firewall I have, I would'nt have found out how many times it try's to connect to microsofts
site.As far as what info that is being sent or not I can't tell, but it does like to call home alot.

From what I here w2k sp3 will have the activation thing like xp,
Not positive about that but, from what I here microsoft will pull all
os's off the shelf but xp.Win nt,98 Me will no longer be supported.
As far as W2k they are going to do with it like they did with office
2000, No activation when you buy it but after a couple of sp packs
bam! activation will be an issue!!!

Will a software firewall prevent microsofts spyware?
if so can you name a good one?
Also there has to be a way to disable it, does anyone know?

thanks:D

I hate microsoft, they are turning into that company in the movie "anti trust" :(

That movie was released at the height of the Antitrust case.

Anyways, XP phone's home about what kind of hardware you have installed, how its configured, what kind of drivers you have installed etc. I would imagine that it also phone's home to check w/ MS about wether or not the MS products you have installed are also pirated.

As for the SP issue in Win 2000, I doubt that'll happen. And if it does, I'll just download all of the hotfixes, rather than install the entire servicepack.

F*ck that. If they wanna get that down and dirty, I'll run Linux. I just have to wait for a version that supports my ATA100 stuff.

I just installed McAfee Guardian and I keep getting a popup asking if C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe has permittion to use the internet, is this the program that spies or does it have another use?

Screw em! Whats the worst they will do to ya. Not let you run any of there critical updates. I could care less. I have a hard time seeing them bust people for using The beta copies of Win XP, Or for coming up with ways to not activate the OS.

Bah .. Microsoft and its lame ideas.. If they WERE to do that in SP3 for Win2k then no one would update to SP3 heh..
Or download its core components.

And eventually I hope Linux takes over Windows if that will happen.
