View Full Version : Win Xp=Xtra heat??
Just installed win XP yesterday, has only just ben released in uk. Before I even got around to investigating the tweaking possibilities I heared my digidoc beeping like crazy! Normally the CPU temp maxes out aroung 45C, it was hitting 53C with all the fans on full! Until I can work this out i've clocked back to defaults. Over 50C is NOT good!
as anyone else noticed higher temps with winXP?

hum, it is supposed to be cooler actually. mine runs at 39C, same temps as my 800mhz tbird. sometimes it hits 40, but its rare. i am also running a faster chip, and its overclocked... so, it runs cooler i think.
check your thermal paste, it may not be applied right.

I think xp is a little more cpu intessive but it would not make your your temp jump 8 degrees..do a ctrl alt del and go to performance tab see what your cpu ussage is with no programs running..
doubt its my AS paste. It was fine in the morning, a few hours later after the install it had gone up nearly 10C!

the only thing I can think of is maybe winXP didnt have the cpu idle thingy at default
you may want to try a Vcool or Rain to see if that will drop your temps
do the temps change much during idle and load now?
temps used to be 31C idle 45C max load after 24hours, now idle is up to 33C and full load for 10 mins gets it over 50C.
It was actually still rising and I chickened out and shut down. Have just checked Heatsink, its still there and firmly seated as before.
my duron overclocked to 930 is at 31C on the XP system. I would double check everything make sure that the hsf didn't move at all and is not caught on the lip of the socket.

when i started to use XP my temps got higher by 3-5C
dunno why but i've got the same setting same cooling and same CPU monitoring program!

WinXP does make the CPU run hotter, because it loops a cpu cycle for windows operations (if you know what i mean) it does it twice by sending it to the cpu cache and then doing it again for extra stability... it sounds weird to me but thats what the guy at Microsoft told me, (he's probably talking out his arse)!!
try taking a win98 hard drive or repartition your current drive and put 98 or whatever you had on before there, and see if the temps remain the same.

yeh, it makes your cpu hotter because it has more to do, dosn't bother me though, i stil have win98
