I know this may seem like a pathetic question, but if one uses watercooling, do you need a water reservoir?

people have done it but I wouldnt recommend it

Generally, you do need some sort of reservior. If you really wanted to not use one, I'm sure that the good OCers of this fine forum would much obliged to help you figure it out.
Why do you ask.

BTW, you're not a loser just because you don't know something. The worst way to deal with ignorance is to do nothing about it.

eh?

I remeber reading somehwere on the front page under watercooling there is someone that didn't use a resivor and noticed a 5c drop in temp or something like that.

Hmmm, that doesn't make any sense to me. THere's no reason having a resevoir should increase your temps. Are you perchance thinking of someone who didn't use a radiator (used a bong instead)?

Viva los bongs! That sounds plausable, since bongs usually are their own resreviors.

It works both ways and every setup is different.
If you do have a resivour there is more water to absorb heat and as long as you can keep the water cool it should work better. However, there can be a point where if your radiator(or other heat exchanging aparatus) can not cool the water and the system would be circulating a lot of warm water. There are a lot of variables to take into account like flow rates, heat exchange rates, air temps,...., but over all I would say a resivour would be better, but not nessisary.

If you want inline, just attach some pvc parts and hose to the fill line to make an indicator, and to pour new water into. This makes it a lot easier to fill imho,.

I would go with one, it doesn't hurt at all and is much easier to fill as well.

i would recommend that you use a water reservoir.. i jusd find it easier to use

i agree go with a res and a sub-pump. thats what i have and i'm very happy with it. for one i don't have to worry bout air bubbles.

I have not had a res in my computer... I also think it makes it a little lighter, Not having one... but not by much as for cooling i don't think it makes any difference as long as U have a good radatior to cool the water U will have no change in temps.. But i would rather not have one just for the reason that some pumps heat the water up when they are in a tank... just think about that.

Reservoir or not, the water is going to reach a state of equilibrium. In other words, the reservoir will not have an affect on your temps. The main advantage of mounting a small reservoir at the high point of your plumbing is for ease of filling and bleeding. Any closed system I build has one at the top of the case.

i can see why temps can go up because of the use of a reservoir.....there is a place for water to stay to heat back up to room tempature before going back through the system, if you keep ALL the water moving, then there's not much of a chance of this happening

tranny cooler with 4 120mm fans on it - oh yeah Water+air cooling - I like that, i like it a lot.....
build it into your side cover have fans inside sucking in.... and all other fans blowing out.... I wonder what numbers that would pull...

I use an Eheim 1048 pump inline, no reservior. It works great, You can see my temps in the sig file below.

I use a fill tube connected to the return water line with a plastic "T". This makes it easy to fill the system and keeps air bubbles out.

I use an inline system also, no reservoir. Temps are good and I use a T shaped PVC Tube as an indicator and for bleeding
