View Full Version : Unlocking x800gto2--think I need new cooler?
So I just got a Sapphire X800gto2 and I'm gonna unlock it to 16 pipelines, and then overclock it.
However--the overclocking won't come until later.
Do you guys suggest I get new cooling for the card with just the unlock to 16pipelines? Will unlocking it make it run hotter?
I know I'll be getting better cooling when I overclock it---but what about unlocking it? Think its needed?
Thanks!! :)

no you don't...... but I would suggest you change the TIM used on the card if you stick with the stock cooler.

The stock cooler is pretty good, if you don't mind the noise. Just replace the the TIM, as said above.
Sorry guys--sorta noobish question here.
Whats TIM? lol I probally know what it is--but can't think of what it stands for... lol!!

Thermal Interface Material. Examples would be Arctic Silver 5, Ceramique, MX-1, stock thermal pads, ect.
Ahhh.
Well I've got a bunch of artic silver 5 left afterinstalling the new cpu/heatsink.
So basically--remove stock fan, apply some thermal paste--reapply stock fan if unlocking?
I'll probally be jumping on that zalman gpu cooler when it comes time to overclock this baby.

Clean off the stock thermal pad first, rubbing alcohol makes it easier, lighter fluid will completly disolve it but you have to clean up the residue. Don't use AS5 on the ram, I'd suggest using a non silver-based paste. Might be worth investing in some Ceramique, or MX-1.
Why don't you suggest the artic silver 5? Or any silver compound for that matter? Would it hurt if I did put it on?
Well at least my worries are over and my gto2 will unlock (checked out fuse setup e.t.c. w/ atitool) so I know it will unlock, and I can't wait to overclock this baby---but that won't happen till I get better cooling (zalman e.t.c.)
