what can anybody recommend? can I play DivX files in linux?

Linux can DEFINATELY use:

gif, jpeg, bmp, png, mov, avi, ogg, mp3, wav, au files. Don't know about the one you mentioned (perhaps cause I've never heard of it ;-)

DivX is an avi file with a specific codec. I have the codec no prob, but i need a player that can use .avi files.

I know it's possible, but I've tried (not very hard though) and failed.

Try konqueror that comes with KDE2 or search at www.sourceforge.net or www.freshmeat.net
