windows update fails!

i keep having these same updates fail:

Try scanning for viruses or spyware that could be blocking the updates.

i tried adware, spybot search and destroy, AVG, zonalarm AV and AS but nuthing.

this is weird...could it be a windows setting?

Have you changed your bootscreen? I did this last year and it caused problems when installing SP2. I had to revert to the backup (old) kernel when booting XP to get it to install, but it was fine afterwards.

i havn't changed my boot screen but, i do have another entry to a previous windows install...could that be it?

Been there, done that.

This is a pretty consistent problem on 2000 machines. It basically all comes down to the new Windows Installer program.

It's not anything serious, so I wouldn't try and solve the problem. What you should do is type in KB54879539u5 or whatever, you can almost always download the standalone file in a non-update manner and install it manually and it won't fail that way.

Oh yeah- can't believe I didn't remember this earlier- download the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (version 2.0 - either search the MS website or check google for mirrors). It will scan your comp and pick out the updates you don't have. Reboot after installing each one even though it's a pain, or you'll risk crippling your XP install.

Either way, it works and you'll get your updates.

Yeah, as already said this happens a lot. Just either try and clear all your settings and unistall the new winodws update tool. Or just try and download the real update file, and install it that way. (infact this just happened to me on XP but all I had to do was go to the XP website and download the update and not use the auto update feature)

Here's a few things for you to try. After each step, try to install the updates again. Rename the Edb.log file... Start | Run | Type cmd, and click OK | At the command prompt, type:

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst ...and hit ENTER.

Check to make sure Cryptographic Services is set to Automatic... Start | Run | Type services.msc, and click OK | Right click Cryptographic Services, and select Properties | Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.

Rename the Catroot2 folder in the %systemroot%\System32 directory... Start | Run | Type cmd, and click OK | Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line...

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit
