Ok. I just built my computer and when I'm trying to install the video card windows just locks up on me. No error message or anything. Keyboard and mouse just do not respond. I've had to restart 3 times already. I have no idea what's wrong. Maybe it's hardware maybe not. Computer is in sig.

[Edit] I'm using Windows XP Pro. I haven't activated yet. I think if I discussed that it'd be illegal on the forums. So just incase anyone was wondering on what specific windows I was using...now you know.

That was the correct term.
 
Ok this is definitely not good. I was downloading the drivers and it flashed up a blue screen, but it wasn' the Blue Screen of Death and restarted.
 
Open Event Viewer (in order to access the error logs, and check for any critical errors)...Start | Run | Type eventvwr.msc and click OK | Highlight "Application" and "System" independently in the LH pane | Right click any error message(s) (critical errors are in Red), and select "Properties" | Use the 'Copy' button in the Event Properties window to copy the contents of the 'Description' field to the Clipboard, then paste the contents into this thread.

Also, open the System Information tool by typing msinfo32 in the Run box | Expand "Components" | Highlight "Problem Devices", and look for any problems that might be listed there.
 
We can rule out RAM (I think). I ran Memtest86 for one loop and passed no errors. Ok, here's what I got:

As part of the troubleshooting, and until we can figure out which Performance Counter is corrupt, I'm going to have you download and install the Exctrlst.exe: Extensible Performance Counter List tool from the following MS site...

The tool is part of the W2K Resource Kit, but also works with XP. Open the Registry (Start | Run | Type regedit, and click OK | Expand the following branch...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | Windows NT | CurrentVersion | Perflib | 009

... and post what the Multi_String Value names are in the RH pane of the 009 Sub-Key.

I don't have anything under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. It just says Name: (Default) Type: REG_SZ Data: Value not set

[Edit] As a matter of fact that's what it says under all of them (i.e. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_USERS, ect., ect.)
 
You need to expand the branch (just like you would if you were in Windows Explorer) that I noted above. If you're unfamiliar with the Registry or the terminology I used in my last post, please say so now.

I need to know the Value data of the 'Counter' Multi_String Value name, and also have you check the related Counter ID's in the ECL... which I can transpose to like DWORD Values in the Registry. Your lockup problem may be totally unrelated, but I have a suspician it has to do with one of EPC's... if I was to guess, probably PerfOS or PerfNet. You could disable the two Performance Counters one at a time, and see if you're still experiencing lockups. Open the EPC tool you installed, highlight PerfOS and uncheck 'Performance Counters Enabled'... reboot and recheck your error logs. If necessary, do the same with PerfNet (after re-enabling PerfOS), then reboot again and check your logs.

It probably was a blue screen of death, especially if you saw a blue screen flash as it was rebooting.

Also, you likely got a virus. If you weren't running a firewall, that came back to bite you!
