View Full Version : The Ultimate Budget Cruncher?
Shuttle has come up with a neat little bare bones system that might be the ultimate budget cruncher for those looking to add a few machines to their farm. It's based on their flex atx FV24 motherboard. It has virtually everything built in. They're bundling this with a neat little aluminum case and power supply. Literally all you need to do is add a cpu and a hard drive. Currently it's a socket 370 board that takes Celerons, P3's up to the cd0 1.13 GHz (no tualatins) and the Via ezra chip. It's not going to be a fast setup, but not half bad either. It's rumored that an Athlon setup is in the works, but given the limited space for a heatsink and almost no ventilation I find this doubtful. Depending on what cpu you buy, you could have a complete computer running for about $300. I ordered one with a 1.13GHz P3 and I'll post my opinion of it if anyone is interested. There are also a couple reviews. Here's one:

Neat little barebones there. A perfect cruncher for a farm set up, epessailly anyone who lives in a dorm...aka me. A little to much money for my taste. But good find none the less.
I would be very intersted in your results TC, post em when you get em!

I'm kind of surprised that people think this thing costs too much. If you can build a complete computer for less than $300 let me know.....

I am planning on building one for under 100 or close to only thing that I am not buying will be the following:
Hard Drive
RAM
Video Card
Those are what I have extra of. I am intregued by that cruncher though. I like the case size very much.
The case size and noise level are what I'm most interested in. In my office I have two computers - one is my web server which just sits there, and the other is my main computer. They actually make a good bit of noise. I have a laptop but I only use it for mundane tasks. The desktop in my office is my power machine. Lately I've been rethinking what I need for a "power" desktop. It's great to get something done quickly, but then again the noise level gets to be annoying when I spend hours at a time in there. I was thinking that I might be able to build a relatively fast system that could be very quiet. That's where the SV24 came into the picture. One review I read said that a Via ezra cpu could get by with a passive heatsink. That would make for a pretty quiet setup - just the case fan and power supply fan. It would be awesome if tualatins would work with this board, but they won't. They run so cool I bet I could use a passive heatsink on one of those too. Anyway I will let you all know what I think of this thing when I get it.

That's where I bought mine - what are you sorry about - not following you on that....
My bad I thought you said it was 300.00.

The box itself is 250, but that doesn't include a cpu or hard drive. It's at least $300 by the time you get done with it.

Guess we need a price to performance study now :) How fast is a 533 celeron? I believe a 1GHz P3 would crunch an average unit in about 6.5-7 hours.

I believe it would crunch somewhere in the 15-18 range. Not bad, but for 300 dollars I would rather go bulking and fast then sleek and slow.
