View Full Version : Win XP and Software cooling
I have no way of testing a theory that I have. I have been running Win XP and it is running cool. That is the CPU and motherboard are running cool.
Does anyone know if XP has a "software cooler" built in?:)

Im not sure, it might.
Something I noticed about XP, The fans plugged into my fan header on my mobo, actually slow themselves down then wp starts. It's an interesting feature, as it quiets down the computer a lot, but i wish i knew if there was a way to put it back up, or if it's temperature controlled.
I would imagine WinXP contains the same HLT commands sent to the processor when it is idle that Win2K does.
XP is built almost entirely out of Win2K so it would be a big surprise to me if it didn't.
So, that means that XP does have cooling because it does the HLT when possible, right?
I may think it does but I dont think it is effective as the Win2K one ..
XP uses too much damn programs itself in the background.
But my initial supposition that there is cooling was completely annecdotal. That is I was relying on my gut feeling that there was cooling because my machine is staying cool.
Interestingly, there is one thing that can warm up the CPU. Some screensavers are CPU intensive. My favorite screen saver is 3D Flying Objects. Then when choosing textured flags as the object you can assign a texture file to be a BMP of your choice. I have used a few over the past year. My current use of this screensaver caused overheating.
