View Full Version : hard Drive Problem.....
Hey,
So I was in the middle of turning a movie I bought into Divx when I decided to try and play music off a drive (F) that is reserved for movies/music/ect. and I came up with some currupt file problem when I tried to play the song. I stopped the divx conversion and restarted the computer. Windows then asked me if I would like to run chkdsk on startup and I let it. Well when I got into windows all the data (except for a couple of files) was GONE :bang head .
I installed getdataback and ran it and it came up with ZIP!!! :bang head
I could use some guidance here. I wish I could remember exactly what was said but I really didn't pay attention to the warnings.... :bang head
Any help would be appreciated!!

I think that programs like that are more like if you deleted the data. If the sector no longer holds data then you may be SOL. I don't know though. Did chkdsk find any bad sectors or anything?

I think it did, the problem was I was doing 10 things at once and figured that it wasn't a big deal so wasn't paying attention.....
Should I run it again? Should I test the drive another way?

Where did you buy a movie in divx? DVD's are much higher quality unless you are talking about a decent sized avi.

you can look around for a proggy called HDD regenerator. Might be too late though. If chkdsk found bad sectors it will "mark" them so data won't be written to it and won't find any bad sectors unless they are new or different ones than before. HDD regenerator will actually repair them if it is possible.
What chkdsk did was took the recoverable data and put it in a folder, probably on the main drive. Unfortunatly it is raw and I am not sure how to recover it.

I know it says that it'll restore files that were deleted from the Recycle Bin, or from Windows but maybe you could try Restoration (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html).
It runs without being installed and I've used it before for things that I've thought were long gone.
Might not work, but it's worth a try at least :)

The only problem is that the data was not "deleted" it was scrapped by chkdsk.

Right, understood, but it's at least worth a try. Especially seeing as how it runs without being installed, it should be quick and easy to find out if there's a chance with it.
I've recovered files from 3 or 4 formats ago that I had assumed were long gone so I figured even a long shot is better than no shot at all :)

I was just goofing around with it and it seems like it would be a useful tool. I am going to hold on to it too. Thanks.

Sorry I was writing the post fast as I was searching the internet and a couple of other things at the same time so might have not been too clear. I was turning a DVD the I bought into Divx. :)

Most data recovery software desnt work unless it is delete data and often it will only make things worse.
try R-Tools - i worked wonders for me!
ok thanks for all the replies, I will try them when I get back from work today.

I had the same experience recently. Open up a windows explorer window, and click on "Tools/Folder Options". On the "View" tab, make sure, "hide protected operating system files" is unchecked, and "Show hidden files and folders" is selected. Now, when you view the disk you should see alot of XXXXX.CHK files. There is a program that can open those files and see what's in them. Then you should be able to extract most if not all of your data from those files. The program is called unchk and works pretty well. Give that a shot :)

It has limited file type support, but should be able to retrieve most anything you would need from those nasty little CHK files.
