Troubles With Norton 2005

So I installed Norton Antivirus 2005 and when its installed a whole bunch of notifications pop up asking me if I would like the program block...such as aim and mozilla.....so i clicked always permit.But whenever it is enables it blocks aim and mozilla both....I checked and they are selected as always permit but blocks them.Further more when I try to update my definitions it says I am not connected to there internet. Any sugesstions?
