I don't really understand why anyone wouldn't want to update to the latest SP, since it contains all of the latest OS and security updates... unless of course that person is running an illegal copy of Windows, in which case the SP won't install. In fact MS has made downloading files from their download center much more difficult, by requiring users to activate their copy of XP beforehand.
 
I was thinking the same thing. Why not run all of the updates microsoft offers unless you have a problem with a specific update, and then, all you need to do is uninstall the specific patch that causes the problem. It seems kind of hard to blame microsoft for stuff when they offer a patch/fix and a person does not use it. But to address the question you asked, you should be able to download the driver you need from your motherboard manuafacturer's website. Another thing you may try is right clicking the device in device manager and change the setting to high speed.
