I did it..
toughest part was pushing the darn tubing onto the barbs.... cut myself doing it. man that stuff goes on hard!
anyway.. i figured the less connections that were actually in my computer the less the odds that fluid leaks inside..
so just the pump and water block(obviously) are in the comp..
I decided to install the Res on the outside of the case so.. i can refill it easier and one less thing to leak inside..
I found some PVC grommets for a GM that did the trick.. angled the tubing.. you can see in pics..
once i'm confident this will never leak i'll zip-tie all my wires and make it prettier.. but here is my first :D

are thoes screws going all the way through your radiator?

NGL_BrSH
12-16-05, 01:56 AM
no.. i don't even see where it looks like there are screws lol..
anyway.. i'll post more pics once i ziptie everything pretty like.. once i'm confident that i won't have to move anything for a while :D

your res is extremly sexy, not a fan of the rad placement though.

The screws holding your fan guards on look as if they go through the rad, through the radbox and into the case. I think I figured out how it's set up now.

How did you drill the holes for the tubing on top of the case and where did you get the grommets if I may ask. I like your setup and the radbox looks like a great way to space the radiator from the top of the case.

So you will ziptie it once you know it wont leak? You should make sure it wont leak before you put everything back in your computer!

-I went to home depot and bought 7/8 bi-metal hole saw and chucked it up in my cordless drill.. pretty much went through it first time but the battery ran out right before i made it through so i finished it with a tungsten carbide cutter in my dremel.

-my radiator came with two straight grommets which i used for the top holes.. but i went to autozone and bought two pcv grommets for late model GM cars.. which are angled. Worked out perfect for the resevoir.

I ran it for 4 hours before i put everything back in.. but being my first watercooling setup i was leary to tie everything up till i run it for over a week.
Ziptie is for the cables.. i certainly fastened the hoses onto the pieces properly.

So far 18 hours no leaks :D

You are golden. Looks great. I think you should pick up that blue ribbon on the floor there and proudly stick it right on the front.

Thanks guys .. good to see senior members saying i did a good job for my first install :D :D :D

I would say that 30 delta is due to the fact that after inspecting the oem heatsink that was on it.. seemed the some of the thermal pad disinegrated making it not really having great conductive properties :P

i went from 65 under full load now to 35-37 c thats F.E.A.R Totally maxed.. like TOTALLY with xfire, mirc, aol, msn, azureus, virus scanner all running.

3.4 p4 overclocked to 3.8 and i'm gonna shoot for 4.2 gradually :D

Yuck, Type R. I hope that's not a TCAB box.... nice color and unique idea on the res placement.

Nice work NGL_BrSH! Not a big fan of external radiator but your right, if it leaks at least your not 100% screwed!!! I'm looking to setup my first water rig after the holidays.

You shouldn't be screwed anyway. You are supposed to bleed and leak test your system when it's NOT hooked up to the componants.

Congratulations on your first WC rig. I would be worried too if my CPU were hitting 65 degrees  !

dude i LOVE that
you could put it inside if you wanted to..but it looks so much more interesting with tubing coming in and out, two things outside
more interesting to look at then just a case you know?

Use boiling water next time to soften 2"~ of the tubing before you push it on. If you didnt do this, its no wonder you cut yourself - its not in the manual to do it that way?

Try boiling it and using a little bit of dishwater soap to slick it up.

I put a cup of water in the microwave until it started boiling then I just dipped the ends of the tubing in the water. It fit on really easy after that.

Thats a pretty clean loop! The radiator positioning looks cool, as does the water color, especially the reservoir itself. It looks pretty cool having the rad and res external :)

I like how you did the holes for the tubing route to the rad and the reservoir, with the washer in the hole it looks very sleek.

Those "washers" are late model pcv GM grommets.. worked out nice :D

***Update***
1 month, no leaks.. nice and quiet.. got my 3.4 @ 4.1 stable without having to do any real large voltage increases or mess with mem timings.. never goes above 108F under massive load.. very happy.. Swiftech wins my vote :D

Do you have a part number for those angled grommets?

I am thinking about copying your setup with a Lian Li PC-7 case. I was going to put the rad on back upside down but the manual says this will "accumulate air over time." So, I guess my only choice is on top. Also, it makes a lot of sense having the res outside the case. Great job!

NGL_BrSH
09-30-06, 05:26 PM
whoa.. long time haven't checked this thread.. but the answer to the last post is any autoparts store will have these angled grommets on a pegboard somewhere.. they were used all small block and big block GM's from 60's to the late 90's. Some are angled and some aren't but just ask for the pcv valve grommet that goes on a valve cover and you'll be fine.
Sorry for the late bump :P

P.S. 10 months.. 0 leaks.. still running great.
Possible make a more creative box soon with more updated equipment.. although this one has no problems keeping up with anything I play.

I like it and the exteral rez is neat, just be careful if you go to LANs/move the case much... looks like a broken res waiting to happen.

Nicely done. If he used 7/16 ID tubing on 1/2 ID barbs he wouldnt even have to use hose clamps, zip ties or whatever...once you get the tubing on those barbs they never come off lol

Mounted the waterblock after fighting the arctic silver ceramique crap..
got my 3 harddrives in and squirreled that HUGE ass 7800GTX in by the tubes.

LMAO!
