View Full Version : best 7800GTX for WC rig
Hey all,
I am putting together a new water-cooled system and need some advice on choosing the graphics card. I have a Maze4GPU Acetal low-profile block and an 8-pack of OCZ copper ramsinks. I am after the 256MB GTX, as the 512's seem to be both expensive and difficult to obtain. Can anyone recommend a good (cheap?) GTX for this application? I have heard good things about both the XFX and the eVGA models, but don't know which to opt for. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
welp, id recommend getting more posts so you can check out the classifieds! they can be had for bout' $375..i paid $360 for mine w/zalman
you can also check hardforum and anandtech. That's the way id go, if you want to go new your lookin @ about 450ish for new

Id reccomend eaither an XFX 7800GTX or as you said an Evga 7800GTX. I have owned products from both companys and have yet to experince a problom. Both have great tech services and RMA policys. Keep in mind however, the XFX runs alot hotter than the Evga model. Here are my top two pics:

Both are around the same price range ($400)and as you can see, about the same stock clock speeds. If this is too much for your budget, the classies or a GT is your best bet.

How far did you XFX 7800 GTX make it only stock cooling? Mine makes it to about 475 on the core before it starts to artificat. Not to great :shrug:

Remebering not to incourege ppl to make loads of silly posts just to get there! Its about how trusting the person is aint it?
Id say go for the EVGA, its more money but it also has the advanced heatsink on it, so if you decide not to go watercooling; its a great cooing device to have. Also, the evga tech support is outstanding. I own a 7800gt and im on the forums often and they help out everyone greatly

Indeed, I have found nothing but praise for the eVGA tech support. I think I will go with one of these cards. Why is there such a price difference between these two models (from newegg):
eVGA 256-P2-N527-AX ($469.00)
eVGA 256-P2-N529-AX ($579.00)
The latter is clocked 20MHz higher, but how could that justify the $110 increase?

The second one has that ghetto cover on it, if you plan on OCing with a aftermarket cooler I would reccomend against that one because (although I dont know for sure) it looks like it would be a pain to take off. And to my knowlledge if theyre from the same batch theyll both probably clock the same anyways- not a good reason having to pay that much more.
Meh, I just checked that theyre both the covered ones, I'd just wait for a non-covered one to come out for 459.00$$ ftw, or just buy from another store because those two are OC'd cards allready , and it's been said a few times before that pre-ocd cards dont oc much more than theyre "stock" oc.
I think you should go with Evga. I had some problems with their products, but as many others have said they have excellent customer support.
