dunno I'm not liking XP at all..

my latest prob...

If I'm playin an MP3 while loadin ICQ, it skips and sputters and stuff,

I watch the CPU load and it spike to the ceiling!!

how can ICQ require 700+ mhz?

and while browsing and jumping pages, I watch the load spike pretty hard as well?

and it never used to do either in ME

any ideas?

XP has a lot of other stuff running in the background while you're just doing regular stuff. That stuff in the background sucks up a lot of compute cycles. Personally, if you want stability and performance, I'd go an get a nice copy of Windows2000 Professional. Its just as stable if not more stable, it'll do everything you need it to do, and its about $400 cheeper than XP.

hmm..
I have 2k server, and 2k advanced server..

would those be a better choice?

Not really.. How can you have those two and not have the pro :D
I believe server is more of a complex OS of win2k and win2k adv server is even more complex so how much ram do you have btw ?

I suggest you use more than 256 more the Win2K and so on OS's.

I have 384mb...

I never did go 2k cuz I heard it had minimal mutlimedia support..

which doesn't do me much good

dont expect to play games on Server(server and advanced)...
well you still should be able to, just will be taking a preformance hit....
And if you install active directory... well no more gams on that system.

But really, If you dont know what server can do for you(if it is the better choice), its not for you. Use 2K Pro.

The 2000 Server Family is slow. Its meant for servers . . . FAST servers w/ gobs of RAM and SCSI and that stuff. If you wanna run one or the other, run plain ol' Server. If you don't want to take a huge performance hit, run Professional.

Here's my advice.

Quit loading programs while listening to MP3's.....

Both require a hefty CPU, memory, and HDD load. Do them both at the same time, and skipping is what you're going to get if the MP3 player is the active window.

Like the guy at work I have.

"I have like a 5 minute sound file that plays when Windows opens, and it wont play the whole thing..."

Probably because you computer has better things to dedicate itself to at the moment....

I run Win2K with SP2...Once I had SP2 I never had any problems doing anything with my system...playing games, scanning photos, listening to music etc. In Win2K you can control/alt/delete and bring up the task manager...it will show you what resources each running program takes.

Same with the Windows XP 2600..

You'll be able to hit up the task manager and see how much ram your using ...

Try using the windows update, there is a fix for sound skipping.

winxp uses a lot of resources.......and i don't know why

if it doesn't enough resource, it makes your program not response.

don't worry my friend..........SP1 for winxp is on our way..............and the second edtion of winxp will come out 2003.

it doesn't matter what happen. Microsoft covers our ass already.

all you have to do now is not to load a lot of applications at 1 time

hmm, maybe it's cuz I installed it on top of ME,

funny thing is ME is still there, I was using Mathlon the other day, and it ran off a boot disk, and tossed me into ME,
I was like "huh?"

oh another thing is, sometimes when I really try the full load..

like ICQ, WINAMP, FOLDING,SETI, or less, sometimes my computer goes retarded and just reboots..
u think that is OC instability? or OS issue?

and I realized I installed the OS while the PC was overclocked...

my ,multliplier is still locked I can only play with FSB, and voltage..

but my CPU temps are some of the lowest they've ever been.. since I changed my HSF and added fans...
