View Full Version : All Hail Ticky Tac

In the past I have had vibration problems with my case. I quickly tired of it, and kept trying various methods to cheaply fix it. I believe I have finally found the best solution, Ticky tac. When I noticed my 5.25” bays had started to rattle, I sat and though for a while what would be the best thing to fill the gap between the inserts and the case. I came up with the handy ball of ticky tac that I keep on my monitor(why I don’t know…) It worked much better than expected. It provided a simple and clean solution, not to mention dirt cheap(free, for 5.25” bays) However I quickly noticed that the majority of the rattling was coming from the right side panel of my computer. So, I asked my mum to go out and buy some ticky tac on the way to school one morning and when I got back in the car after school she had gone to a local store(craft supply strange enough, usually find this stuff in the office supply stores) and bought me some. I graciously thanked her and then put it on my desk waiting to fix the side panel until I put in my new PSU. After I got the psu installed, I decided to go after my rattling case. First came the little bits shoved between the drive cages to keep them from rattling. Then, I used 1/4 the package between the gripping front of my case side, to keep it from rattling against the front frame, and a large ball placed on the motherboard tray to keep the entire panel from resonating. Thus, my problems with vibration are gone.
nice find, im not that familiar with ticky tac, are there any problems with heat,
did your temps rise after u installed it?
and what is that picture of- translucent coins?

The yellow stuff is ticky tac(which goes by many MANY names) and I overlayed a picture of the ticky tack with coins pushed into it. Just showing what its really made for.
And no problems with temp. I've only placed it in areas that have no effect on temps. In fact, I would not recomend using it in areas where it could fall into some area in the computer and short/jamb something.
I appreciate the info but just what is ticky tac? I use rubber grommets, liquid electrical stuff, etc., but I don't exactly now what that is.

To tell you the truth I don't really know an EXACT use for ticky tak. As you can see, it can do lots. SOme uses are hanging posters upwith it...etc. It's kind of like asking what is wood for. Well...wood can be used for lots of things. It's got the consistency of silly putty, and is an alternative to push pins.

Poster tack, it's like larger masses of post-it note glue

I wish I could give ya'll an offical name/site to buy it at but I can't name anything other than the "Handi-tak" lable for the package I have, and that I'm pretty sure 3m invented the stuff.

yeah! we call it blue tac, we have it in school
But ... it's not blue!
Anyways, I still think rubber grommets look cleaner and well, less yellow. Great idea though!

You could also use a clean kneaded rubber eraser in the same way. Not sure about the conductivity on Ticky Tack (I assume none) but a kneaded rubber eraser isn't as sticky and shouldn't become a dust magnet like all the poster putty I've ever used has become. Plus, poster putty has the unsavory habit of leaving an oily residue and beading an oily discharge when heated, so you might not want to put it near anything hot...

Well, the stuff we have is the same thing, but blue
Dude, good thing you thanked your mom, my old teachers would always say how expensive that stuff is.
Nice solution though, I love resourefulness like that.

I also used that stuff to get rid of the vibration of my Thermaltake Armor doors, works great.
I use s**t loads of blue tack in my case :D Got one of my fans secured with it... Both my fan controllers have lots of it on them (If you have a CM Stacker you'll know why)
