View Full Version : Molex Modding?
How easy is it to change up the wires (switch them from one slot to another) with out "proper" molex tools? I'm trying to decide if I want a more powerful fan, and just do that mod on it, or if I should get a less powerful fan and not do the mod. Thanks!

I found that without a certified "molex" tool and just a paperclip or small knife male plugs are easy but I find female plugs major a PITA.

K thanks for the VERY quick reply Son, I've never looked hard at how Molex's are assembled, but yeah the male connection is the one that would be modded. (if I'm recalling this correctly)
Thx.

JCW, all you need to do is bend in the one or two strips that are hanging off the sides of the main pin so they can easily be pulled or slid out the back. Take a look at one and you will get what I mean.

A small straight pin will do what Son is mentioning very well.

I have use old ink pens, needles, and a pen knife. Also broken razor ..my favorite a hammer.. Long as you know the itty bitty ears have to moved off of the ledge of sorts. I guess a retianer is a better word.
To get the ends back in and not fall out. I just use a needle to push the ears back to the proper position.

one thing i would like to do to my PSU wires, is use a different kind of 4 pin connect. One kind that I can connect quickly and cleanly without it taking up alot of room. I dont even use most of the connectors on my PSU. You can by little kits for extracting all the different kind of molexs I know.
Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated!

I hope we see a molex project in the future. :D

Welp, may be, but may be not, since the only use I have for the molex modding so far, is for a 7v Mod for a fan, which is pretty simple in my opinion. But who knows, may be I'll do a small thread on it just cause you mentioned that. :santa:
Useful sticky! (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=367661)
Good read for ghetto methods, but really a nice dedicated tool costs $7.

Oh wow, thanks Navig. I looked in the Volt Mod section for the 7v Mod, didn't know that sticky was there :)
I've found that if you have an old leftover antenna from a set of rabbit ears you can take it apart and some of the metal pieces work perfectly as molex removers. I have a female size and a male side JB-Welded together so that no matter which I needed it was either one end or the other.
BTW -- the females are always the most difficult to figure out. :)
