View Full Version : MDF case
Im looking to make a carputer sometime here soon and have a lot of extra MDF left over. Does anyone see a problem with using this to build a case? Of course it will have vents and ducts for cooling etc.

Other than that I hate MDF for working with, not really. I just hate the dust. You can wear masks and stuff, it still gets in your lungs and makes you caugh (sp?) for a week. Never again! anything but MDF.
Good luck on the carputer though. I've always wanted to do this, but I don't use my car enough anymore to warrant the expense. Someday...

I have never really had a problem with lots of dust when I am cutting MDF. I used to cut 1/2" MDF all the time. I used to build speaker boxes for myself and friends. I was cutting on a table saw in the middle of my yard though. So, there was NO chance that there wasn't enough ventalation.
I think your computer case will be very sturday and possible heavy, but I don't see any problems with using MDF for a properly ventelated case.
Ya i like MDF, i've made many many sub and speaker enclosures with it without a problem. Its a tad hard to move a sheet around by yourself though because its so heavy :( .
You should have no problems using MDF.
if you get it from home depot, they will also make 2 cuts for free. maybe more if you tip them. they've got a real nice saw with plenty of suction that makes it really easy. you just have to know how you want your sheet cut before you go, and you can have a good portion of the work done for you. i was making a keyboard tray, and was able to do it without making any mdf cuts.
i would imagine an mdf case would be great for a silent computer.

I forgot all about that cutter they have. It looks kind of scary...lol. It is like a wall that has a saw blade moveable track.
I had them cut some MDF once. Never again. The guy cut them wrong the first time and had to give me a new board, the 2nd time they seemed ok, I got home and measured. Some cuts were off by atleast .25" I decided to just use up some of my own time and stick w/ the table saw. After having them give me a 2nd board for free.

gotta make sure you use some sort of sealent on the inside of the case though... over time the wood will start to shed small amounts of dust (especially if it's warm inside because the heat up/cool down would cause the wood to expand and contract very slightly)... so a good sealent method for the inside would be wise to protect your components.
Sweet idea tho... :)
If all goes to plan the "case" will mount in the middle on top of the box in the pic below...I did some quick paint drawing to give an idea. Btw ive cleaned up the carpet a lot. That pic was taken after the first rough cut.
Edit... I guess it would help if i attached the pics :bang head.

LOL...a few L7's and 1500-2k watts of power is what I would be worried about.

What amp are you using for your car audio set up? Any electrical system upgrades? What kind of car is this going into? Three L7's in ANY vehicle would be loud as ***** given the propper amount of watts. I had a friend who had 3 12" L7's in an extended cab Silverado and all I can say is that crap was WAYYYYY too loud...lol.
Extended cab f150. For the l7's im goin with 3 hifonics bx605's (one per sub) or 3 kicker kx1200.1's....good accomidations w/ work. Electrical is an optima yellow top, 200 amp alernator, upgrade of the "big 3" wires ---battery pos. to alternator, battery neg. to chassis, and chassis to non essiental bolt on the block.

That is going to be NUTS! I miss my car audio set up:( I never had a set up that substantial though...lol. Now that I am getting old (24...lol) I think I am going to stick to a MAX of 2 12's, but more likely 2 10's or 1 12 in a ported box. Besides I drive a honda civic now. There isn't enough room for all of that and my alt would not support that kind of load any way. Damn foreign cars...lol

Check out some infinity reference 12's. Right now buy one get one free at circuit city comes out to 55 a piece. Theyre cheap, dont need much airspace & power, and sound pretty good.
Btw...im kinda at a setback. Got my stereo stolen last night, out of the work parking lot ;(.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear about your bad fortune. Hopefully everything will work out for the best.
Np. Things should work out ok. I should have been expecting it though. Twice last week my door locks got messed up. The passanger one day, then the driver another (i did fix them though). Then it just so happens that thats how they got in. All in all it works out well bc I kinda wanted a new one anyways but still sucks that it had to get stolen. Along w/ the fiberglass "kit" and all.
