View Full Version : Fluorinert FC-40
Hey all,
So I was looking at all the different options for non-conductive solution, when I realized that my company has a 5 gallon jug of Fluorinert FC-40. Apparently, it is not being used for anything and I can take what I need. Does anyone have experience with this stuff and how well it performs? My one worry is the density, which is 1.87 g/mL. That is nearly twice as dense as water, which will mean drastically reduced flow. Will a D5 still be able to push this stuff through two blocks and a rad?

This stuff may be what you want if you are going to immerse your motherboard it is not intended to be pumped as a coolant in a conduction convection cooling system pure water is your best bet for heat transfer. proper water cooling build procedures is your answer to conductivity problems. No leaks no problems.
I'm more worried about ease-of-mind than pure cooling potential. I have no doubt that distilled water + antifreeze will give me better cooling, but leaks can't always be avoided. If this could give me passable results, I would be willing to do away with a few degrees C.
fluid xp would probably be a beterr bet, its less expensive (for the inevitable refills down the line), it is closer to water in density and it is nonconductive as well.
Anyone think this stuff is still worth trying? I mean, I can get it for free, and it has the potential to work well. I'm surprised that nobody seems to have tried it.

no body has tried it cause florinert(sp?) is like $200 a gallon to the general public
True... but people on these forums have prometias and SLI'd 7800GTX 512's and freaking laser beams on their heads

I lol'd because it's true...Everything except for the laser part...

It's only going to be usefull if you want to submerge your motherboard in it. Which would be sweet. Super sweet.

Dr. Evil: You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done. Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here! What do we have?
Number Two: Sea Bass.
Dr. Evil: [pause] Right.
Number Two: They're mutated sea bass.
Dr. Evil: Are they ill tempered?
Number Two: Absolutely.
Dr. Evil: Oh well, that's a start.
:D
Back on topic,
Won't work well for that. Just used distilled water. Thats as good as you're going to get while having good performance.

I can't think of any cases where the loop was completely clamped and leak tested for 1-3 days that ever just suddenly started leaking. I have changed my setup at least 4 times, 3 of which were comlete overhauls where I changed the tubing and everything. Every time I leak tested for like 1-2 days and I have never had a leak. When I get my new system up with a 7800gtx i will do the same. So I think you are a little too paranoid about leaks. If you aren't so worried about performance you might as well just keep with air and use large heatsinks with quiet fans on them.

Alright, alright. You guys all have a point. Sorry for being so paranoid... I will go with distilled water and antifreeze just like the rest of ya. Between the DD barbs with o-rings, MasterKleer tubing and mcmaster non-perforated worm clamps, I really shouldn't be at high risk for leaks. Thanks for all the help. Maybe I should call my new rig "preparation.... H"

Now to the bigger question: Can I have the Fluorinert?
