Hey folks, I perused the sticky but didn't see what I was looking for...

I've currently got a few hard drives, my main drive (C:) is a 160gb ATA133 with an 8mb buffer.

If I was to upgrade it to a Xgb SATA with 16mb buffer, would I see a performance increase in startup time, program loading, level loading, etc.?

Cheers! :)

Maybe, maybe not. Benchmarks yes. But you probably wouldn't notice loading times decreasing, unless you bought a 10,000 rpm SATA drive like a Raptor.

if your drive is fully functioning, then dont upgrade. it isnt worth it. Just wait til your hard drive dies or you need more hard disk space. Sata is not worth just getting to replace something that is functioning perfectly.

I did notice a dramatic improvement. Your mileage may vary.

The only drive I ever had a noticable speed increase from was a 15K U160 SCSI drive, used to boot into Windows in about 45 seconds. Other than that, I've never had an increase where I could tell the difference just sitting here.

SCSI drive taking 45 seconds to boot windows? :bang head
My XP boots in 20-30 seconds, Seagate 160GB 7200.9 SATA

That difference can be achieved by some different tweaks on the Bios and the apps installed.
