Maxtor shareholders will receive .37 shares of Seagate common stock for each Maxtor share they own. When the transaction is completed Seagate shareholders will own approximately 84% and Maxtor shareholders will own approximately 16% of the combined company. (http://www.seagate.com/cda/newsinfo/newsroom/releases/article/0,1121,2924%5E1,00.html)

Seems like a giant eating a rather tall person. 84/16...

Here's hoping that it spurs innovation...With the exception of the Atlas 15K II SCSI line, Maxtor's performance in recent years has been a bit spotty...

Compared to regular companies they're both giants ;) But yeah, untill now i wasn't really aware that seagate is actually three times as big as maxtor.

Its sort of like when Palm absorbed the BeOS people. They took a few bits of technology from them, and then threw the rest out cause it was junk :D. Well that is interesting.

beos was screwed after apple didn't adopt the os though.

More news from the NY times
Link-a-dink (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/21/business/21deal.html)

The deal is supposed to be complete in the second half of 2006. I did not realize that Seagate was the lagest hard drive manufacturer. Number 2 being Western Digital, followed by Maxtor in third.

And her is an article at Techworld (http://www.techworld.com/storage/features/index.cfm?featureid=2102&inkc=0) about the buyout.

wow, this is huge, now I wonder if Seagate will start to fix the performance and reliability issues that have stemmed with Maxtor drives recently.

I have used maxtor Hard drives for over 2 years and I never seen a performance or reliability issue with them.
From 80 gig IDE DM9's to 250 gig sata DM10's some of the best performing drives on the market and great prices also.

(I've had bad luck with any Maxie I've owned)

fortunately i have yet to get a bad really bad drive from any of the companies, although my brother had a few WD caviars fail. (back when the 6.4's were just coming out, a few 2's and 4's were crapping themselves)

All my hard drives in my entire life have been maxtors and only one has crapped out on me.

I just bought a western digital and thats my first hard drive from a different manufacturer. It was heavy. haha.

So if my maxtor craps out... who do i contact to get it RMAed?

For a long while our company used strictly Western Digital drives, however as of late, and do to the 5 year warranty, we've switched to Seagate only. We've been using Seagate for the last 3 years now and have had zero issues so far. I had good luck personally with Maxtor, WD, and Seagate, even Samsung (back in the 20GB days). In the grand scheme of things we didn't have many issues at all.

I knew it, it wasn't many years ago that Maxtor was BIGGER than Seagate. But for most of the past 25 years, Seagate has owned. They should show % of market share of all HDD companies, across all consumer brackets. There is like less than 10 HDD companies in total (including the little, little guys).
Seagate, Samsung, Maxtor, WD, Hitachi, Toshiba. Don't remember the smaller ones.

I havent had a problem with my Maxtor, but that still didn't prevent me from ordering a WD3200KS today :p

Hopefully I wont have any problems with this WD either.

I tried to purchase some stock in Maxtor 2 weeks ago, my order didn't go through. I was really kicking myself this morning when I saw the news, and that Maxtor's stock was up 45% this morning :(

Heh, it seems like everyone has such different experiences with Hard Drive manufacturers that who's to say which is the best and worst (apart from the poll in this forum ;) )

As for this merger, I never really cared much for Maxtor, so I can't say I'll miss them any. I hope this brings some new innovation to the industry and improves Hard Drive technology.

I still don't understand these beefs people have with HDD manufacturers. I've used so many different drives and I can't really say I have a complaint about any of them... except maybe IBM ^_^ Perhaps some of you systematically and unintentionally abuse all the drives you have in a certain way, and different brands are sensitive to certain abuses. ;)

i agree, all of my hard drives are maxtor and i've never had a failure, however, this aquisition is glorious. the one downfall maxtor has had is the drives tend to fail more in high i/o environments. they run seamless until you really start taxing them for extended lengths of time(however mine are still going strong), seagate has always been a well known server storage option, their drives can take enormous amounts of i/o and laugh at you while doing it. i can't wait to see the future of maxtor/seagate drives, this should be a big boost for maxtor in years to come

I'm a big fan of Maxtor, and I've been using their drives (trouble-free) since 1998. Every time I upgrade or build new machines, my old Maxtors find their way into the computers of friends and family, and I've never heard anything about problems.

So, on that note...I'm saddened by the news of the takeover. On the other hand, I purchased some Maxtor stock a few months back while it was about $4.10 a share, so the fact that it's now trading over $7.00 makes me pretty happy.

But, I'm hoping that Seagate will let Maxtor continue to operate as-is, although that's almost never the case.

Agreed, I just don't know how so many people can have problems. If I asked how many people had HDD failures on one of the other sites I post on, maybe 1 or 2 people would say they had problems, ever.

Same here. I do a little tech support on the side and so far, have only seen one bad hard drive on an IBM Thinkpad (notebook, more prone to damage) manufactured in 1999.

I stopped buying Maxtors after I started to notice that they just seemed so damn loud compared to Western Digital's.

Haha same here with the thinkpad thing. Replaced it with another IBM drive? Oh well... laptop HDDs are kinda doomed from the start what with being baked.

Interesting. I have seen the opposite. One reason Seagate may be one of the largest hard drive manufacturers is because of factory made computers, such as Dell or Gateway. I once replaced dead Seagate drives on an ENTIRE lab full of 6 month old Dells. I bought a Maxtor DiamondMax 8 and have had nothing but luck from it. :) It is quick quiet and reliable so far for about 3 years or so.

Funny though, I jumped on a wicked deal for a 200GB Seagate, so I am hoping it holds up after being part of the horrific Dell event.

One thing I noticed though, is my Maxtor runs nice and cool, this Seagate, I just put my hand over it and I can feel the heat radiating. Maybe it just needs to be kept cool and all should be good. Those Dells had absolutely zero airflow over the hard drives, which could be part of the reason they failed.

If it feels hot to the touch it will die faster.

Don't know if it is good news.I have liked Maxtor all along.I probably have a dozen old Maxtors from the 90's still working but they are so slow compared to the newer generation drives. They suffered bad when they made the larger 7200 rpm drives with the old steel bearings. They ran bad hot without airflow and I had oine fail.Maxtor replaced it with a new dm9 80 gig that I still have.7200 rpm drives with steel bearings was a bad idea for all manufacturers.

Max0r
12-25-05, 06:38 PM
All the drives I've ever used but one or two ran hot without airflow, even without data transfer.

12-26-05, 05:33 AM
My new baby raptor runs MUCH cooler than my seagates. I had to rearrange the order of them, putting the raptor off to the side with minimal airflow, just so the seagates could almost stay as cool.

BUT, what does this merge mean? Are all the Maxtor resources going to just become Seagates? Like, Maxtor's factories will make Seagates, and be done with it? Or will new Maxtor hard drives just be re-labled as SeagateMaxtor, but basically be the same drive?

Max0r
12-26-05, 01:55 PM
Perhaps it is only for financial stability reasons and won't affect Maxtor drives. Then again if certain people are gotten rid of or shuffled around, it probably will.

This is pretty sweet. I hope segate cleans up maxtors shotty hard drives. pretty much every maxtor ive owned has died. the only one I have that is living is a 3yr old dioamdmax plus 9 (the slim ones)
