Is Ducting a viable option on a pc.
I was thinking...

Take a large Heatsink and fan to pull the hot air from the chip, then using some sort of ducting (plastic tubing or casing) to direct that air out of the rear of the PC. Say above the power supply on the full tower cases.
Also you could use another case fan to draw air from another duct towards the fan to aid in the directional flow of the air.

Just a thought...

Yes, ducting is a fairly popular and effective way to make air cooling more efficient. I think most folx duct into the hsf, but some of us use the exhaust method you describe.

And a very good thought it is. There have been a large number of posts regarding ducting, what to use, fans, etc. I believe most of the conversation was around how to be sure you were properly feeding fresh air..or..removing hot air with the use of extra fans.

Haven't done a lot myself..I've used cardboard for minor stuff in the past.he he! Try it out..report your findings..see if it really helps your cooling situation!

Thx for the answers guys :)
Ok ill look into it.
Might make myself up some ducting and get a case fan.
Then if i am sucessfull, Ill look into a front intake.

Well ive got an update.

My Dad is a mechanic and works on cars for a living.
he suggested using a different type of water cooling system to compliment this idea.
First of all you get a radiator(i think) to cool the air being brought in (you could sit this on top of the pc then use sealed piping to bring it into this pc via the back, either that or you could sit it infront of the pc).
Then duct the water cooled air through the ducting directly across the chip and out an exaust fan.
My dad says this is how car engines are cooled, taking in outside air, cooling it, then using that to cool the engine(i think).
Id use this in conjunction with a heatsink and fan. The heatsink fan would pull the air up towards the exaust.

I was also thinking that you could use sealed piping to duct this.
So the air would go from the back to the front of the pc with no outside air contact.
You could use large plumbing piping to do this, or fasion your own.
I just thought this up in the last 5 minutes so theres gonna be something wrong with it :P but its just a thought(another one :P)

Don't know where you are from, but if it is cold outside, I would refer you to this discussion:

Dryer vent tubing is cheap, too!

ive been happy with my duct for a long time, my duct just draws the cool air in and with good case cooling my temps are low p3 1g @ 1292 with 21C for system and ambient and 24C for full load my setup usualy runs at full load 3C over system temps, if you use a duct in my opinion its best to use a HSF that blows air down on the HS as it can get hard to duct cool air in to the side of your HS. Well one note experimenting is what overclocking is all about if you figure a way out that can keep your full load temps within a couple of C or below system temps let us know your trick :)

I have a duct in my system exactly like thw one you describe, takes the hot air out the back. Lowered my CPU temp by 3c, keps the case temp down.
