hello people,

it has been a long time since i last came in here cause i'm pretty happy with my AMD 1400 till Athlon XP came out. the problem is that now i'm plaining to get the XP 1800+ but there are a few questions left on my mind that i need answer to. hopefully all you GURU out there can help.

1) will the XP 1800+ clock better then that of the Athlon 1400?(Swiftech 462-A HSF)

2) hear that the XP 1800+ will not run at full speed if i'm using SDRams..........is that true?

3) will the ASUS A7V133 Raid MoBo clock the XP 1800+ well enough with the lastest BIOS

4) if i would to change to a newer board, what board that supports DDR Rams is best for the XP 1800+ and overcocking?

i'm planing to get the XP 1800+ on tuesday so i'm still hoping maybe somebody can convince me not to get it or convince me to get it sooner. it's up to u pros. thanx in advance.

I'd definitely lean in the direction of a 266a chipset. I've got a 266, and have heard the memory bandwidth the 266a provides is MUCH better...:)

My XP 1800+ ran 1702MHz, right out of the box. I haven't unlocked it yet, either...;)

11.5 x 148 = holycowthisthingisfast :D

As Mr. B said if you get a new board try to look for a kt266A board, epox has one and they make good boards (8kha+ I beileve)
You will probaly get a bigger jump in performance if you switch to a ddr board then the one you have now. And you should be able to overclock pretty well w/ that HSF.

well, in that case i'll have to start saving money to get a new board. 266a chipset........what brand and model comes with that. seriously.......is ASUS a good board. i was a Abit freak untill somebody convince me of getting an ASUS. i don't mind trying another kind but hope somebody can tell me which to try. i am still willing to spend another RM 1000 on my PC. also, does AMD XP 1800+ means that it runs faster then a P4 1800 MHz chip?

According to AMD an XP1800+ is equall to a Thunderbird 1.8. But it should be better than an Intel 1.8.

Everything that I have read on websites, and saw myself here at home... The XP1800+ will dominate the P4 2.0 Ghz, and I'm not alone in my thoughts. Sure there will always be 1 or 2 tests that the P4 will win at, but when you look at real world use, it's AMD all the way. I was "die-hard" intel until this past spring, now I'm "die-hard-anyone-that-can-deliver", and that happens to be AMD today!

The two mobo's I'm looking at, are the Shuttle AK31 rev3.1, and the EPoX 8KHA+.

I'll back up Mr.B's opinions about the XP1800+.....slowly I've bumped up and have it running @ the same speed as Mr.B..... rock solid.
I have the Epox 8KHA+....

Mr.B..whats your system temps running @ 1702.?

does the EPoX 8KHA+ have Raid? currently what i can get my hands on is the EPoX 8KHA MoBo. there is no + there so i was just wondering if there alot in difference. hmmm......why is it that here in Malaysia is so slow in terms of PC parts :(

so looks like any and all ASUS boards is out of my list. furthermore, EPoX is much cheaper :p
thanx again Mr. B and also not forgeting the rest of your who have replyed. please let me know if there is anything i'm missing out.

One more thing, can the Swiftech 462 - A HSF fit to this EPoX Board?

Geez...I honestly don't know. Seriously.

If I go by the MSI motherboard monitoring program, I idle at about 40c, and hit 45-46c under load.

Sandra shows me idling about 35c, and the BIOS has me idling about there, as well (36-37c)

I recall reading somewhere, with the configuration of the XP (now having all of the ca-ca under the chip, as opposed to on top like the Duron/T-Bird), temp monitoring is a bit inaccurate.

I don't think the K7T266 Pro is accurate at all....:(

I DO know, that I haven't had any heat related problems, so whatever I'm running, is working fine. ;)

**Neither of the two boards I mentioned does...=(**

thanx again Mr. B

**No problem....I'm still just learing this myself. =) **

**I believe so, but I'm not 100% sure.**

I have a K7T266 Pro2 and the temp monitoring program that came with it, PC Alert III, consistently reports temperatures about 5 C higher than motherboard monitor. I'm not sure but I'm hoping that motherboard monitor is the more accurate of the two.

Mr. B, one more thing though, what batch of XP 1800+ are u using? is there a certain batch that can overclock better? like the AMD 1400, the code AYHJA is good for clocking right? is there something like that i should look out for when getting the XP 1800+ ? thanx again Mr. B

P/S : Why does your systems seem to overclock better then the others :)

Only equal to an Intel 1.8, a true 1.8 AMD would be truley the fastest CPU on earth. the 1800 rating is for the Intel guys. The chip runs stock at 1.53mhz. See pic at stock speeds.

Actually, I've seen lots of XP's run faster than mine....most of them are about 150FSB (1725MHz), but I've seen some hit as much as 1.8GHz air cooled elsewhere on the net...

I know both Skip's and Stompah's XP's hit 150, maybe a bit more...

oh man, how dissappointing. the price of the XP 1800+ was so freaking expensive:(
there was no way i could fork out almost 1K for the chip. well i still manage to get the XP1600+ and i did clock the FSB abit but notice that it was not that stable. now i have drop it back to normal but put the voltage to 1.85v which i hope can help it 'burn in' abit. anybody knows if this will help? XP 1600+ is actually 1.4GHz right? i just want to get it up to 1.55GHz and i'm be very very happy. i'm trying really hard :)
wish me all the best

you are lucky! =) i got almost the same exact info on my chip and i can only get up to 1620... i wasted 20 mins before installing it to unlock it too.... =(
