Be more descriptive.
Do you mean a 24x36" poster on a 24x36" piece of paper, or just printing a bunch of 8.5x11" pieces of paper and stitching them together to make a poster?
If the former is the case, there is not much in the area of simple software that you can use to print a large poster. Quite frankly, the printers used to print poster sized images are not simple machines and the software necessary is neither simple or inexpensive. I recommend taking it to a printing shop. For under $50 you can get a poster sized print at professional quality. Just make sure that your print is at full 300dpi, because some shops will print at 150 or 180dpi, which doesn't look very good.
If the latter is the case, check out the rasterbator. http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
If I need a quality poster, I use the photo Poster Printing capability of www.walgreens.com
Most of what I have used them for tend to look like high quality Prints of paintings.
