I just brought some computer stuff like hard drive and cdrom etc...
and I told my friend that I was going to run Linux on my computer but he said that I needed to get Linux compatible items
Is this true?
nope :). the only thing i know linux has a problem with is winmodems they are supposed to be real hard to install.

try this list to see what hardware you might can use.

just through my experience with linux, i've never had problems with hard drive and cdrom compatibility.
yes and no. there is not linux drivers for all hardware. i have an aureal sound card that will not work with linux because aureal never released details about their hardware to the public. you might have problems with external devices as well. from what i hear linux hates usb devices. most popular hardware items will have drivers. if you buy a modem make sure its either an external modem running off a serial port or it specifically says hardware modem.
good luck.
