Here's where I posted the details:

If anyone has some good ideas, let me know as I'd sure hate to have invested $89 on a new processor for nothing.

repost of what i posted there:

hmmm..... what sorta HSF did you have on there before? The only similar experience I have was i used to have an AXP 2000+ then upgraded to a 3200+ without upgrading from my old HSF. The old HSF was plenty good enough for the old CPU, but not for hte new one. Had temps similar to yours. All it took was a decent $45-50 HSF from any reputable e-tailer (i use x-oxide and newegg and when they have it, pcdirect).... and my temps got under control.

Another thing.... make sure you didn't make the same goof i did.... Did you accidently put the HSF on BACKWORDS?!?!? (i did that once... nearly fried that old 3200+ Barton even with the new HSF)....

37 degrees at idle is on the high side, 63 under load is obviously on the high side. Is it possible the the shim is interfering with the HSF seating when using the Barton?

Is it possible the the shim is interfering with the HSF seating when using the Barton? When I took the T Bred out, the AS-5 was properly distributed with that shim from Shuttle in place. I expected a temperature increase with this new processor but didn't expect a 10°C rise. Even the old processor was fairly warm. I'll take a look under the hood in a week to double check the AS-5 distribution. It's a PITA to work in Shuttles but if that's what it takes...

I'm also thinking of a case mod where I'd install a reverse blow hole right over the processor and inject fresh air right into the case. That increased case positive air pressure should increase the flow rates through the CPU fan. I'm also going to replace that stock 200W PS with a new 300W one by Shuttle. That should also quiet things down a bit. This box has grown noisy with all the fans kicked up to high :(

What is the case temp? It's not behaving like the HSF isn't seated at all, more like the AS-5 is thick because the HSF isn't down all the way. Is it possible there's a different shim for the Barton and T'bred? In the Barton's I've built, none used a shim any more complicated than four felt pads.

When I take it off next week, I'll see how that shim affected the AS-5 spread. I don't think those felt pads would do as good a job protecting the core from chipping. This heat-sink is rather heavy and is locked down only with 4 stiff springs around the 4 mounting bolts. I suppose the metal shim could be lapped down a few mils thinner.
