View Full Version : How do I set up my 2nd rig (networking)??

Hi gang,

I've got the Main box folding at a good clip, but I have something here I'd like to add to the party. I just need to figure out how...

Sitting behind me, is my intel "testing" rig, which consists of;

Abit SH6
P/// 700E @ 968
512 MB PC133

Now, my internet connection is cable. I know that it's keyed into the number of my ethernet card. If I change my NIC, I can't get online (until they come out and fix it...:( and then it's keyed into THAT card...).

So...I've got the coax coming out of the wall, into a modem they provide, which has the Cat5 cord running to my NIC.

What do I need to get, and how do I hook it up, so I can have both rigs hooked up the the net, Folding away?

You need to get a router that can mask its MAC address. My Netgear RT314 can, I'd reccommend it, it was also pretty cheap. When you set up the router, there's a place to type in the MAC address that the ISP has on file.

Yup, I do that too and it works great. Although I have the RT311 because I have my own hub.

A router is definatly the answer. I have the Linksys. Some people don't like that one but I have had no problem with it. Make sure you get one with a built in switch, four or five port whichever, or you will have to get a seperate switch or hub. :)

What's a good price for one of those, sfa ok?

And, how many PC's could I plug into it? :D

(I've got most of the pieces to throw together at least one, if not two rigs in the near future...lol)

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have a Linksys DSL / Cable Router. It too can do the MAC address masking.

It has a built in 4 port switch, which is nice..:p

Also does DHCP, NAT, and other cool network things. I really like it. Basically, if you have no other network equipment, you'd be able to run 4 computers off that and all would share the internet connection.

Here (http://www.us.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?sku=10235958&loc=219) is a link to buy.com. It's around $80.

But, if you already have a hub or switch, they make a one port model that can plug in to your existing network.

If you need any help with this, don't hesitate to ask.

It has a built in 4 port 10/100 switch. Mine was $70, but that was quite a while ago, I'm not sure how much they are now.

Also good to check would be the for sale/trade boards of (gasp!) other forums, good ones tend to be Anandtech, [H], and the occasional Ars Technica.

Would I be correct in stating that a Linksys BEFSR41 is the equivalent of the Netgear RT314?

The specs look the same....

I really like the Linksys, its what I have. The Netgear is supposed to be pretty nice as well. Not sure what else has IP Masking. Both can handle supposedly like 200 computers, but they get bogged down once you reach the level of 20-32 so you should be fine. And Mac Masking is WONDERFUL!

Netgears are great, I run a D-Link 4 port myself. I believe that you are not bound to that nic card. At least that is what I gathered from what the Install guy told me when I asked him. Your router will eliminate bottlenecks for you tho which is one of the great things about them. It's due to in part that it is dedicated to do one Job. Therefore it does it well, With the 4 port routers you can eventually daisy chain more hubs or switches unto it for more computers =) It's really all in preference, I am going to switch all networking gear (Router, Switches) over to Netgear personally. They are one of the best.

If you need some more help brian just let me know I will do what I can to help you out.

p.s. There's some sales this week to get NIC's for like 10 after rebate.

Thanks guys! I've had a look thru our Classifieds (nothing there...:( ), and e-BAY.....now I've got an idea of how much $$ I'll need, and what to look for.:)

An alternate and lower cost alternative would be to share that internet connection on your main rig.

If it is Win2K, it is very easy and Win98 is only slightly more difficult.

All you would need for that setup would be a simple hub or switch.

let me know if you need some Cat5 and how much. I will make it free of cost for you as long as you pay shipping. Cat5 that is sold in stores is marked up somewhere are 300% which is on top of the the 300% the company sells it for.

William I might need one too if you don't mind but I'm not sure. I'll update as soon as I can.

Fold hard or go home(and fold as much as you can)

I wondered about the markups. After seeing what they wanted at the stores around here(anywhere from $8 for 7ft to $12-15 for 25 ft. $21 for a 7' crossover:( ) I went online and bought several 25' and 70' cat5 cables for only $25 total w shipping. :D I wish I could remember the name of the store. Usually shopping online is cheaper but not THAT much cheaper.

can get a router for about 149 canadian. You can plug as many machines into it as you wish. You can put a hub infront of it.

cheaper way of getting the machine online would be to use your main box as a router. If you're running win2000 you can use internet connection sharing.

2 lan cards in the main machine with internet connection running and one in the pentium machine.

But if you're network is going to grow, a router is definately the right option.

you should also try Netgear routers they all mask there IP address if they don't and your cable company finds your using it to connect extra machines they get a little annoyed (I know from experience)!!!!

I got my cable suspended for a week when I was in the UK!!
Now I am on 56K dial up very slow and unreliable, feel sorry for me, please?

My cheep way of doing this is a package called freesco its linux based and works very well. Its setup is easy (I thought it was anyway) It boots from floppy and it gives you a use for old systems like my 486/33 my router is running on :)

You can place the NIC in your windows box let them install then move the card to the Freesco router and they cant tell you changed systems.

Am lucky my provider doesn't need to do MAC address locking as they provide the modem and you have to have there modem on there system. So I can hook up as many PCs as I want. I just can resell :) They only give me one IP so I have to NAT but that's ok.

You can find Freesco at www.freesco.org

Good luck

* steps up on to soapbox *

That burns me up

They sell you the bandwidth to your home. What you do with it at your home is YOUR business. If you want to network 1,000,000,000 computers in you home on that one connection you should be able to. I could see if you were connecting to you neighbor and providing a service to them and taking business away from the cable company, but if it is all for your personal use, they should keep out of your business.

After all, any respectable computer nerd should have AT LEAST 2-3 computers in their home (at a minimum) :p

* steps back down feeling relieved *

My CC hasn't given me any problems. I was assigned a new IP address as soon as I plugged in my router. No probs. They only allow one IP at a time though. Technically one comp at a time and I agree that it's not right. I guess they are concerned that people will hook up several PC's to one line with different IP addresses causing them to buy additional IP blocks which is avoided by using the router.

Now folding on;

AMD XP 1800+ @ 1702MHz
intel P/// 700E @ 933 (usually stable at 968, but I want to make absolutely sure it's stable, so I backed off a tad ;) )

Cheers!
