Im planning on using Win2k pro (which is already installed) and XP Pro. I have 1 partion on an 80GB HD. I just got Partition Magic 7, and want to be able to dual boot. So.... I use partition magic to make another partition, then how do i specify the partition for XP to install on? and is there anything else i need to do? Thx in advance.

Touche. Thanks.
XP Pro nees about 1.5GB, so how large should the partition be? around 1.7GB?
And w/ dual boot configuration, do i still defrag the same way?
Is there a way to install a game, and have it plyable on both OSs? i dont really wanna install things that im gonna use on 2k & XP twice...

With a hd that size I would even your partions off (you’ll achieve quicker access times)yes you defrag the same way you normally would (each OS separately) and as long as your not trying to read a NTFS partion from a FAT partion alls you have to do is make a shortcut to your programs and put it on your other partion.

If you just have to make a shortcut to the prog on the other partition, then what about registy entries that the appz/games make when you install them? Wouldnt you need to be using the OS that u installed it on?
And finally (at least i think), would it be best to make 3 partitions: OS/OS/DATA?

Its nice to know that the sexiest guy on the OC.com forums is helping me out. :D BTW - you look great in red. :D
j/k

wow, forgot the biggies:
1. Does winXP work w/ FAT32, or do u need to use NTFS?

2. Which is better, fat32 or ntsf? do they serve different purposes?

j/k I run all my games on win 98 and and have played them in xp from the 98 install. about the 3 partions that would be lodgical if you store a lot of seperate data.(it would be easier if you have to reformat one or both OS's you won't have to worry about backing up the extra data)and if you delete one partion it will not automaticly make the remaining one take up the whole drive again you would have to merge them.(you can do that in partition magic. and last but not least ...LOL :p @"Its nice to know that the sexiest guy on the OC.com forums is helping me out. :D BTW - you look great in red."

1. I don't believe you can install xp as fat32 (or were you asking if NTFS can read fat ??if so yes but fat can not read NTFS)
2. NTFS is more stable and more secure (IMO fat dosn't even compare to NTFS)

So then im assuming your XP is on a FAT32 partition? OK, i think this is my last question: How do you access another partition in windows, (one that your not running the OS off currently)? Does it appear in my computer as a drive?

at least.. er... at last... thats what i meant :D

EDIT: Just read your last post, ive already got XP on my athlon machine using FAT32 (windows 98 was installed on that - so i just upgraded - so im sure its fat32)

I think i might just convert my current win2k partition to NTSF, and make the new one NTSF too, thats seems to be the best solution.

So it converted the drive while upgrading.. those weazels at M$...
Ok, so if i convert my curent partition to NTFS, there will be no compatibility problems, right? I think ill just make em both ntfs.

I think ill just make em both ntfs. well by converting win2000 to NTFS you will be able to access any files from ether OS so yes it would make more sence to do it that way.other wise you will not be able to access files from xp when you are on 2000.

Ok, just made a brand-spankin-new NTFS partition, now i have an 'extended' partition that is 20GB large... what is this, and how do i go about using that space? is it still part of the win2k partition?

Yeah, it can. PartitionMagic said so! :p
Found out the answer to my last post.
Well, its still 'processing', damn, 80GB is a lot to have to play around with, looks like its gonna take awhile.

NTFS is better anyways. More security and better file allocation.
