hello guys, i bought the ecs/sempron 2800+ combo from fry's about 10 days ago(i actually bought 2).

link to the mobo - http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?DetailID=502&MenuID=21&LanID=9

i offered one of the combo's for my buddy who wants to build an htpc(home theatre pc) from it. hdd is a brand new maxtor sata drive - http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=AA33200&CartID=done&nextloc=

everythings fine when i installing windows xp media center edition sp1. when i try to install sp2 it doesn't work any more.

1rst time, installed sp2 and it wouldn't reboot whatsoever, nothing just a hang, i left the pc on for 1/2 hour and nothing.

2nd time, when loading sp2 it gives me the option to close and restart, it locks.

i've tried reformatting the drive countless times and one of the two above happens.

i went to mwave(where i got the hdd) and rma'd it. i have a completely new sealed drive.

i just wanted to ask for your guys suggestions.

when i put the mobo and hdd together i cleared the cmos, when into the bios and selected "fail safe defaults" and made the "1rst boot device - cdrom".

when i install xp media center sp1, right after i install the chipset drivers from the utility disk included with the mobo. then i reboot, then install sp2 and thats when the problems start happening. i did consider the mobo being bad but i was able to load sp2 with just a regular ide drive, this would be fine but my buddy is insisting on sata.

thanks for looking and your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Slipstream SP2 onto your install CD, and create a new XP CD. Try installing that way.

thanks for the tip KN, i don't know how to slipstream, i did read the sticky here but its beyond my mental capacity.

your advice did get me to thinking, if i was to slipstream sp2 then that means that i wouldn't be installing the mobo drivers until after sp2 is installed.... i know i'm slow...

before i was following the procedure before which wasn't working

xp pro sp1
mobo drivers
sp2

now with your enlightenment, i modified it to the below

xp pro sp1
(cause i don't know how to slipstream properly)sp2
mobo drivers

IT WORKED !!!!

KN, why is it working this way? it only took one time and its working flawlessly. this is like the 8th time you've helped me with my pc issues and they always worked :)

my buddy doesn't even know the problems i've been having, he just called me and told me whats taking so long

put this one in the archives, and i hope it helps others as well :)

My guess would be a driver that SP2 installs is not working with the motherboard drivers that are installed.

i have an old sp2 disk that was given to me about 8 months back. maybe a new one will have all the updates???

thanks again, i'm hoping to take pictures and post them in here

They don't update the SP unless there is a major issue with it (like the SP4 rollup for Win2k), or forced to (like SP1 and SP1a, only difference is the removal of the MSJVM from SP1).
