I took a look at XP and MP OEM chips here in Akihabara, Tokyo and I can see the scorch marks between bridges on the XPs (I was hoping to find some early unlocked XPs - no dice).

On the MPs, I don't see any scorch marks but I don't see the bridges connected with gold traces either (I didn't look using a magnifying lens, though). Are the connections within the PCB layer or whatever they use?

Also, will an MP work on a single CPU motherboard? The MPs are just early Palominos, aren't they?

MP's are Palomino cores, and up until recently they were using the older ceramic package. The new MP's use the organic package and all the ones I have seen were unlocked, whereas XP's have been locked so far. You can definitely use an MP in a single config.
