View Full Version : Why Do YOU Not Play RPGs?

I'm considering playing/buying my first RPG, even after telling myself I never would play a game like this, but what turns me off of RPGs are:
-monthly subscription fees
-limited distance you can see (foliage and detail when you are close, and when you look off into the distance it's just green hills. When you walk to one of the green hills, it TOO is detailed, you just can't see it far away)
-not enough PVP
I'm not exactly educated in MMORPGS, but this is what I have seen from most RPGs. I wish there was an RPG that was just a constant battle between 5 different groups, with sub-classes and there's so much going on on your side. Your group plans days when there will be an all-out strike on <x> group...It would just be so cool to like get on, knowing that you are about to pwn people that are unsuspecting...
EDIT* Oh yeah, also I want to be voice chat.
You also have to be able to ride things, have pets. etc..
I also want there to be weird items (I was once watching my brothers friend play some mmo and he got this scroll that, when used, made you fly really high up in the air and then fall to your death...)
Hmmm, this has turned into more of a "what I want in an MMORPG" oh well...
I guess if a game had these things then I could easily justify paying monthly

Might like Fung Wan, last I played it had a cool concept of 4 clans. You join one and they all fight over relics. So when I got bored I would just go to the other clans main town and kill a crap load of them (I was high lvl of course) and every so often there would be a mass raid on a clan were over 100 memebers from the clans would come and just go crazy. Though game is a tade old so grphics are not perfect. Or maybe you would like something more like Dark and Light (in beta) claims largest enviroment in any game, and last I played it probably was. It has pets and what not if thats what you want. Oh and a RPG is not the same as MMORPG, an RPG would not have monthly fees since they are usually offline solo play.

RPG, MMORPG...same thing :D I want one with a lot of people, and I wanna take advantage of my new graphics card, so good graphics are a must. I guess I will just wait.
Okay. The sole reason why i no longer play RPG or MMORPG games is that i do not get anything in return! FPS you get like a reflex boost sort of, i don't know, but it doesn't leave me with the bitter taste of emptiness. I just don't get anything in return.
Plus, FPS and RTS are more action packed.
one more thing, i don't consider chatting a skill.

I don't play because
a) I haven't found one that makes me go  OMG I GOTTA PLAY THAT!!!
b) I don't want to be locked into a monthly pay to play, especially if I decide to stop playing for awhile and pick it back up down the road with the same character
c) I don't want to become addicted and sit around more than I already do (it's called everCRACK for a reason :p)
d) Most of my gaming time comes in short intervals, never several hours at a time. It's much easier to open up DoD:S and frag a few rounds and get on with whatever needs to be done.
e) I get burned out WAY too fast on most games... I have tons of single player games on my perfectly fine xbox that I have less than an hour on, but I always play steam games when I get a chance to game. Kind of sad and a poor investment, but I know I'll always have them there with no compatibility issues! I've probably only played all the way through about 5 games in my life, Fable on Xbox, Deus Ex on the PC, Halo 1 and 2... are a few I remember finishing off the top of my head. The Halos were in co-op though. I used to constantly beat Mario though on the NES.

would you like some cheese?
on another note i play world of warcraft and that keeps busy kind of get you addicted, but i would say the games kinda slow paced for some of the classes. you can just sit on ur ass and press f1 - f5 and number keys 1-9 as a healer and just keep an eye on there health. not much needed in the way of Intelligence quest wise (all quest info and resources are online anyway) so its possible to just read what to do off a guide and do it BUT when it comes to raid bosses and things like that you will need to have a good strategy well built and balanced party so that's fun. someone on the forums described it as a chat application with something to do so theres some quite mixed views
but its really addictive some great pvp if you pick a good class and build, draw distance isn't to bad bad either... if ur lucky a forum member may be willing to give u a 10 day free pass. so u can give it a try
and it also happend i have a question for you, one that will test the very limit of your iq....
Would you like a piece of toast...

a typical RPG helps your reading speed, also your reading comprehension.
and alot of RPG's DO require you to be FAST, and think on your freet at the last second, many mini games that require SPEED.
then there's action RPG's, such as kingdom hearts. which isn't turn based, and requires speed, and forces you to heal, and attack and cast magic at the same time, while dodging an enemy.
Also, alot of typical RPG's have puzzles, and such, which require you to think instead of FPS's, which require you to just pump the mouse button.
Intelligence/ability to solve problems > just being fast.

Two major reason's I'm against MMORPGs (Although if given the chance to play I'd probably get addicted.)
1) I'm against the notion that you have to pay to have the game and then pay to have the priviledge to play with the game that people payed for in the first place. The pay per month is just pure profit. They're probably already sitting on a wad of cash already when people just bought the game. It's insnane.
2) There is just not enough action for my tastes. I like something fast-paced and fraggable.
My $0.02
[Edit] I have no problem with straight up RPG (i.e. Final Fantasy 1 & 2 for NEs, I loved those games. It's the MMORPGs I don't like. Mostly because of reason #1).

it's not pure profit. they mainly use the monthly fee money to keep their servers up, they aren't free you know.

Hmm. Those rpgs are different. I don't mind playing Morrowind since i do own the first one. The puzzles do get annoying but are fun as long as i can solve them in under 5 minutes.
I really hate games like Ragnarok.

based on what i know for world of warcraft max u pay £8.99 per month if you pay by credit card a little more if by game card.
thay have reached over 5 million players so thats £44,950,000 a month thats based on uk money so prices may be slightly different elsewhere but that cant be to far wrong thats alot of dosh.. the game costs around £30 (u get a month free subscription) so blizzard are making a hell or alot. but on there defence they have very active development, in game support as well as out of game, help lines in a different countrys speaking lots of different languages but still im sure there turning over a huge profit

MMORPG and RPGs are different, MMO is multi player, while plain RPGs are usually single player.
Ragnarok was alright when I started playing it. After I got to level 99 and started being a GM on a server, you learn pretty much the whole game, gets pointless to play since you know what's next. I heard Ragnarok2 was coming out soon, looks good.
Makes sense that some MMORPGs charge monthly fees, mainly because who else would pay for the servers that hold up thousands and thousands of people. But then forcing people to pay would lower popularity, and allowing free playing would increase the laggyness and game quality. I'd say having the special armor and whatnot obtainable by using cash is a good idea, if your rich in real life, it's on equal to have that reflected in gaming, can't argue that its unfair, their rich anyways. (Or rather not use the word "rich", just one that has money on hand to spend on MMORPGs)

I know it's not pure profit. Sarcasm is a bit hard to convey over the internet. The pay to own the game and then pay to play....they've got to be raking in dough with over 5 million players. I know that keeping a server up isn't free, but do you think they could divert some (maybe just a fraction?) of the money they make just selling the game itself to upkeep of a server. It doesn't really matter what I think. People will still buy MMORPGs whether or not they agree with me. I'm just stating my opinion that paying to play after I bought the game just doesn't sit right with me. I'm not angry at anyone for stating in a previous post, so don't think I'm mad. I'm just stating a little clearer (I hope) my view.

yeah, a game with TOO many puzzles sucks...gets boring. and then it really ticks you off when you HAVE to figure out the puzzle to continue...argg. hate games like that.
Yeah, MMO's have been lagging. and no one is comming out with something new and exciting. WoW doesn't excite me for some reason. the game just doesn't interest me. Not good enough PVP for me either.
Wow would have been better if you could TAKE OVER towns. Have a main city for each type. Which can't be taken over. Everything else is up for grabs. and there is a constant war! THAT would be fun, and i'd play a game that gives you a REASON to pvp other than just bragging rights...
Guildwars isn't even an MMO to me. its all instanced. i'd rather take lag over instancing. and i HATE arena type PVP which guild wars has! i HATE IT.
StarWars Galaxies would be REALLY fun...but jesus..what a GRIND. 6+ months just to become a force adept. and to be a jedi master...god. would be fun...but i don't have that much free time.
there's a million things i could say i like and dislike about MMO's. and there's stuff i'm sure we havn't even thought of yet.
untill something REALLY catches my eye...i'll just keep waiting.

I never liked RPGs because the concept seems silly. "ok, you hit me, then ill take a couple minutes to think about how ill attack you back and we'll keep taking turns" borrrring
I like FPS where its like, that guys comin around the corner, BOOM HEADSHOT!!! Then its like, Im comin around the corner, BOOOOM HEADSHOT!!!! I like how you need good reaction time and 1337 h4x0r tactics.
Is there a game where you walk around in third person view collecting items, but then when you attack it slips into FPS view? that would PWN

You can say the same for FPS, you kill me, I respawn and try to shoot your friends.
If you think about it that way, Pong just as complicated as BF2 or CS:S, miss the ball, try again and hit it across, shoot, die, shoot, die.
But oh wells, games are fun.

If you think about it the way you said it, Darksparkz, I think he means he likes the fast pacedness (I think I just made up a word) of the FPS as compared to the slower paced (in comparison) style of the RPG. That's just from my reading and quick (and potentially faulty) analasys(or however its spelled).

haha, i was just kidding. it all boils down to outsmarting someone/something. its like a game of chess. i just happen to enjoy killing people from a first person view and you like killing things from a third person view. its a matter of personal preference.

I only like FPS games that you respawn a few seconds after you die (UT, DoD / :S), counterstrike bugs the crap out of me... especially when you suck at it and die quick... you wait more than you play!
