View Full Version : MySpace: Your Thoughts?

My first thought was that it was going to be a fad that passed quickly, but 46 million people seemed to have proved me wrong...I used to be "anti-MySpace" because all I would hear at school was "did you see that comment I posted last night on your MySpace?!?"...even my PHYSICS TEACHER has a myspace account! I hear the term "MySpace wh*** quite often, and its sad to see people obsessing over their SOCIAL NETWORKING profile instead of going out and being social. Business Week magazine has an excellent article on MySpace here (http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_50/b3963001.htm) that mentions problems like hyperdistractability and stalkers. Its not hard for a 14 year old girl to post all of her contact info online only to be stalked by some 60 year old pervert...
However, despite all of this, I see some very good aspects to MySpace as well: it does provide an excellent way to meet new friends or strengthen bonds with old ones. Its music features are amazing...anyone in a band can put their songs up for free to be seen by the entire internet. Hawthorn Heights is a great example of this: with no radio play and barely any advertising, they've become one of the biggest bands in the emo/screamo/hardcore scene, with much of their popularity due to MySpace.
So do the benefits outweigh the risks? I don't know...
Your thoughts?

Everyone always tells me "Check out my MySpace", and I'm like "OK, Dude". I guess it just doesn't do anything for me. I'd rather surf here, and gain some form of knowledge (or any technical forum) opposed to looking at people's stupid My Space stuff, and wasting minutes that will never come back ;)
But then again, I am more of a Hyper-Spastic Introvert... I'd rather do my B.S. socializing at Band Practice, or at Gigs - when I'm "In my element" (on the drums :attn: ).

Quick question:
Is "my space" that service that is only open to those who have a student ID at some school? With all the blogging services out there today, I can't keep track of what is what.
Should it be the case that it is what I am thinking of, it is fairly useless as you would only have the ability to use it for the few years that you are in secondary school. After that, you would have to start a new service, if only for the reason that your current service is stupid.

Nope. Open to any Joe Blow that wants to say "I have my own webpage - Check it out. I'm so cool. Look - that is me and this girl I met last year. Hey, here is a graphic I made last week. Doesn't it rock?" ;)
It certainly has a strong following, but so does Gaming (I don't game either)... It just doesn't make me "tingle" like it does for others (I'm far from a teenager FWIW)...

bah, i find myspace, and blogs the most pointless thing on the net.
more pointless than Pron!
i just find it a complete waste of space. wate of time, and a waste of my time to visit someone's my space page, when i know the person in real life.
friend: " hey, go check out my webpage on myspace!"
Me: "Why? i already know everything about you, i know what pictures you will put up, and i can probably guess what you will say on the page. and i can guess with a 95% accuracy of what song you will put up on the site..."
pointless, waste of time, waste of space...bah.

its funny cause all the people i know that make fun of geeks and nerds end up having my space accounts.
i'm not into blogging, etc. i use the net for information. people use it to date supposedly?
i don't like it and i don't date girls with myspace accounts, if they have one it gets annihilated.

I find it amusing. It has some strong points, such as keeping in touch with people. It also has some weak points, such as it's users (:p). Too many people want a page that looks "cool"...and don't care about the fact that it's basically unreadable.
Take mine for instance. It's annoying and conceited, I know it, and that was what I was going for. It's basically a joke for me. ;)
I still mostly find people that are there because it's cool rather than because it's something useful. But that's their choice, and if they're having fun then more power to them. Not like I can say much with the page I have. :p

I have one so I can meet my old friends. I've changed and people can see that. Myspace just helps get in touch with them. But I visit it like once every other day, I didn't fix up my page. It's the myspace '****w hores*s' that are wacky.
But I find a lot of people are anti-myspace just becuase it's popular. That just seems rediculous.

So what? Of course stuff like that's going to happen, shock news or whatever doesn't mean anything.
Yes, some kid shot himself and posted it on a website, I'm sure he's the first person to think of something like that.
Anyways, I'm not even exactly sure how the whole networking thing goes. I don't have any friends so I don't have a myspace. How much bandwidth/server space do you get?
Myspace is alright. I use it to keep track of friends in RL that's overseas. I just hate how some people have like 500 friends and think they're the bomb.

My 26 year old friend found one of his previous best friends from school on myspace about 8 months ago and they are now hanging out; Myspace does have it's good sides.
I think it is useless. I would rather all of these people just make an actual website and customize it to their liking rather than doing the same thing over and over again. But, you know what is even more pointless than myspace? Discussing something as pointless as myspace. :p

facebook is the one that I think your thinking about. Its mostly all college students. My space is for everybody else :D
Yeah I found some old school mates from middle school. It's ok get to talk to some friends you've never seen for a few years.
Never used Myspace, but I do have a blog on my own domain. Mainly used to let friends and family who live in other parts of the country know what Ive been up to.

i have no issues with myspace. i have one, you can meet tons of people. i dunno, ive never though of it as being like a risky thing, just something you do for fun.
I have a Myspace account, but some things really tick me off, i.e. Music in peoples blogs. I really don't want to be playing my Metal out really loud then some idiot puts a Britney Spears video/song in his/her/it's profile. Atleast they could do is just leave it on pause, if i want to listen to it, i'll click play. In which case if its Britney Spears i won't ever play! :P

Yah, I was thinking of facebook last night. Anyway, it seems to be more or less the same thing as face book (and a bunch of other similar services). Basically, a way to have a personal web space without going to the trouble of setting up a proper web site.
I set one up this morning and if anyone wants, they can feel free to add me to thier facebook page (or whatever other site). Here is the link:

The thing about a blog on your own domain is that if you haven't given your friends the URL, they can't find you. The nice thing about MySpace is that its all centralized, so anyone can search for my name and find me. Like some people here have said, old friends can get in contact with you again just by searching for your name.

Facebook is better.. cause its only for us cool college students :- ]
Well.. the college version is anyways..
Yeah, people are dumb. One of my roommates was a so called "myspace wh***" He would come in, sigh, act all emo and stuff (cause he was the most emo kid in the universe).
"Whats wrong, Jessie?" I would ask.
"Oh man.. Rough weekend"
"Oh yeah? What happened"
"Read my Myspace.. its on there"
Then I went and pwned some n00bs in counterstrike instead. THAT'S where myspace is bad. Cause people spend their whole social connection thing ONLY on there.. not just to catch up with old friends.. those ARE the friends..
Of course, they have their benefits too.. I met my girlfriend on facebook :- ]
Yeah, yeah. It sounds funny.. but it actually shows the GOOD things about facebook and stuff. I had just broken up with my girlfriend (I'm a junior, shes a freshman, she got trashed and hooked up with a frat boy her first week.. luckly a close friend of mine was another brother there.. she hooked up on my friends roomies bed). Anyways, one night I decided to make a facebook page.. my roommate had one.. it was cool to connect with people in classes.. so you could get their IM names to ask for homework, or just whatever.. So I made my page. Within about 2 and a half hours, all of my highschool group had friended me. I had seen some of them about 8 months before, but we were just watching a movie so none of us got to talk. So, I suggest we all make a late night Wendies trip (one of those random things we used to do back in the day). Of course, one lived too far away. One wasn't comming home. So, me and one girl from the group decided to go do something. We picked apples. Then went to dinner. Then watched a movie. And held hands (aww).
Now its been around 3 months. And if it weren't for facebook, I never would have met my girlfriend a second time :- ]
So see? Its dumb in some respects (emo kids being too god damned emo) but good in others (getting to meet up with old friends that you lost touch with)

I can sum up myspace very easily for those who aren't familar with it and why you should avoid it. (FYI I made an account when the site was new in 03/04? because a friend recommended it to me)
EMO/SCENE/THUGS FAD - (Still not sure what this Scene thing is)
Photoshop - (Take 5000 pics, photoshop the best one's, don't forget to include a half naked one too)
Music Band Adds - (Crappy Spam Band Add Requests - Disable them)
Underage Kids - (Under 18 kids pretending to be 18+, get to see how much of a ***** your 12 year old daughter really is)
Bulletin Spam - (Spam the Bulletin with chain letters or other garbage)
Friend Request Spam - (No friends in real life = 10,000 on Myspace)
Media Page Spam - (2 Music Videos playing, Plus 2 songs, and 50 comments with Music/Videos/Flash/ETC)
Refer to this website for the Photoshop picture descriptions:

Don't forget to do a search for people you went to high school with or if you're still in high school. You can get to see how full of **** people make them selfs out to be. From Straight to Bisexual to Gay over a 2 day period!

Not really. Yea, you get a lot of that, but that myspaceisgay link is just stupid...someone has too much time on their hands.
Of course some people don't like it, but you can't tell me becuase someone takes a picture a certain way means they are 'stupid' or fat. Hell, I know that's not true.
I happen to love getting band add's. After I added As I Lay Dying to myspace, I got GREAT local band add's that were indie and related to the type of music I like.
I don't get friend requests spam...Anyone that says add this person isn't my friend.
Photoshopped photos are the artistic ones. Whenever I see a photoshopped picture, it's either really stupid or artistic.
Underage kids? Get to know the person a LITTLE and you will get their real age faster. Most people just make themselves 100...wow, big deal. Noone I know makes them selves 22 and tries to get people to believe them.
Media page spam? I might have 3 videos...just stop one, listen to it when the others finish. I like it, especially when it's 3 video's I like.
And the emo/scene kids...It's a thing we see every where. It is just easier to see on myspace.

however its useful for keeping in touch with people whom you normally would not.
im not too cool to keep in touch with my friends, but the advertising, and downtime and MEDIACORP aspects are near-dealbrakers.
rest assured, that once a myspace virus comes out (and it will happen someday, i bet)
that the pain will outweigh the gain, and people will abandon it in droves.
The thing about a blog on your own domain is that if you haven't given your friends the URL, they can't find you.

My post was supposed to be things I've noticed, the link to the website is simply a humorous thing as if you've ever been on myspace then you can get a kick out of it. Myspace is serious business eh? Wait...Fox bought it out so technically that is a true statement.
And the emo/scene kids...It's a thing we see every where. It is just easier to see on myspace.
I still cannot figure out this whole thing. AS near as I can tell this is about people who feel that life sucks, their life sucks more that anyone Else's, they want you to know this so you know that you are can't possibly be as cool as they are because you can't possible know the pain that they are going through.
or something like that...
Lots of my friends are getting into this myspace thing. I still have no desire to get a profile but it looks like it could be good for a few laughs...
I'm starting to have friends that live or die by this stuff. they get all upset if something bad goes on, or if they don't have enough friends. Its pretty funny especially the older ones who should not be affected by stuff like this.

As trendy as it is to have a myspace page, it seems to be a growing trend to diss anyone involved with myspace. It is what it is...you're always going to have the annoying people, or stereotypical people that you associate or connect with a certain blogging site (such as myspace). But there really is more to it then just 12 year old kids crying because they got grounded, or teenagers being emo because a girl broke their heart. It provides an opportunity for people to meet up with other people that share the same interest's as them. It provides an easy way to communicate with a large pool of friends that you have. Some of the bands in the music section really are great and will probably get the exposure they need because of myspace i.e. myspace released their own CD recently. So I guess in summary....my thoughts are....myspace provides the service it was created for, and does it quite well. Love it, hate it...it is what it is.

First: There's already an OCForums group. (groups.myspace.com/ocforums)
Second: Stop pimping your pages. Enough have been posted that you can use them to network with other people. Or join the OCF group and you can pimp them that way.
Though I'm totally not trying to pimp my group. Haha, this is an awfully hypocritical seeming post. :p

OK, I will take this. It is a service for the great teeming masses that Ed call “the Joes”. It doesn't allow much freedom to create anything that passes for artistic but then looking at what I see on there, that is probably a good thing.
Many of us already have some other service that allows us to do a much better job of creating a personal web site. When you have full control of what shows up, then you can do a great deal more than myspace allows. Even if you just use html 4.0, you can make a better site that you can on myspace. Heck but you can also get scripted sites today that make a nice personal space. Wordpress comes to mind.
But one nit: as far as the pimping goes, we already pretty much know each other. Yes, there is always the possibility of putting your myspace url into your profile but is it really a bad thing to have a single thread going like this? Perhaps if this was moved into O/Community it would be a bit more acceptable?

I prefer facebook to myspace, it has pretty powerful search functions and can dynamically find groups of people based on their interests. If you have a movie in your profile, say, Snatch, you can click on it and it will show you everyone at your school that also has it in their profile. Plus people can make groups for likeminded people at their schools, ie: people who like Family Guy. I found a couple old friends (read: hotties) from my old high school plus people I know at other colleges.

Actually, it's more the pimping without a contribution that's not good. (See above post by Super Nade).
And I don't think I'd be in favor of an Community thread that's just that, advertising for another site isn't something we allow very often (not the individual profiles, but myspace itself). I don't really think it would add to the community here. Nerdy has a good suggestion with them as your homepage.

Thats another thing I don't like about MySpace: the search function simply sucks. I can search for a name OR I can search for a location, but not both. The only reason I got a MySpace account was because a good friend of mine is moving to U of Hawaii and he has one, so its easy to stay in touch through MySpace. However, I didn't know his MySpace URL, so I had to search for it. So I can search for the name "Jeremy", which gives about 1000 results or so ( ), or I can search for everyone within 10 miles of a given zip code that are his age, which give 100+ results or so, but not both. Why? That makes no sense at all.
What you were saying about interests though, there are "groups" and "networks" in MySpace that sort of do that. Groups are things like schools, bands, hobbies, etc. Anyone can make one and get people to join based on that interest. Networks are more professional, somewhat like a mini-craigslist. Also, anything you put under Music, Movies, TV, etc, is automatically linked to a search for that term. But I agree that Facebook is much better overall in terms of this sort of thing.

My 'Critical Approaches to Digital Media' teacher brought up facebook in class today, saying how amazing it was to him that people would so freely share their personal information! He said his nine year old daughter was browsing party pictures from one of the members of the class (the guy who originally sent him an invite). He's really chill about it, but it's scary to think that our teachers can go online and see how we're mis-behaving! God forbid our parents are allowed to join...
I have one

Only because i was bored...i dont have any of those stupid "What are you..." questionaires or whatever. I just have it cos...i do. I have a bad background and i just check it once a day for messages from my friends back in england...thats about it.
I cnat stand the idiots who spend hours answering the dumb questionairs or say like CHECK OUT NEW PICS </3. Waste of time. Go out and meet people in person. I know the majority of people's pictures on myspace...dont even look like the person in real life, i met one, i know as she lived near me so we met and she didnt look anything like her pictures so i was ok w/e and left and i dont really care much about myspace anymore.

Myspace gets the womens.

Well, I don't know how you figure that. Sure, eventually you will have a big network and it will include quite a few of the fairer sex. But at the end of the day, it is just a web site. How that gets you anywhere other than having a web site is beyond me.
Also, as far as the questionnaire things go, it should bear noting that while nobody has to do them, they are going to be useful for establishing the character that you want to play in the myspace community. They need not tell anyone anything about who you really are. Take the ones on my space for example. I went through them selecting the answers that would tend to drive the eventual result in certain directions, mainly to see what type of internet character I could create.
How does it really help anyone to know that my perfect biological molecule is an enzyme? Not at all. But by selecting the type of answers that were going to provide that response, I have driven the quiz in the certain direction of the dark, brooding type of guy that I chose to suggest that my web site would represent me as.

It is a good way to keep in touch with friends, but there is a boundary between obsessive and normal myspace users.

I have a myspace.
MYSPACE (http://www.myspace.com/20160787)
I don't mind it when people don't do outrageous things to their pages. Sometimes it gets to the point where I can't even read another person's info.
Also, I think people should not be so obsessed with it. I know girls (and a guy or two) that go home and log on right away every day.
Furthermore, comment chains bug the hell out of me. You know, send this to 15 people in the next hour and your crush will do something or whatever.
Basically, its fun when used in moderation, but it starts to get really bad when people go overboard.
Pop Culture needs to go...to H.E. double hockey sticks is what I think.

myspace suffers from the same issues that plague livejournal...lots of timeouts.
actually myspace is worse, much worse, perhaps because more people are on it. it is buggy with firefox too.
bottomline it's a fad, much like the ipod is. i am a lemming - i have both dammit.

^^ Timeouts? I've never experienced timeouts...nor problems with firefox...
And I highly doubt the iPod can be considered a fad...currently, its status is unarguably an "icon", and I think it will stay that way for a few more years. MySpace, on the other hand...well, like I said in the OP, there are 46 million users...it would be hard to convince them all to leave...

MySpace: Your Thoughts?
Like any web site. It is what you get out of it. For a large site like this with groups gathing up into circles. It could be a great way to create a community atmosphere. Or it could be a way to just advertise yourself and who you are. I can see the allure for those who are online alot or who have alot of online freinds.
It used to be geocities and icq for this type of connectivity. I think how myspace is setup is a neat thing past the older models. Loads more interaction to the content producer.
Myself I will stick to having my own website. I perfer to be in control of my information. It is nice to have a spot to share pictures and events in a life to loved ones far away. All what you want to get out of it, or in some cases, put into it. Over time I have not made a spot on myspace, or visited the domain. I have my reasons. It was easy to not go there.
One person who I was curious about who posted a link to their myspace site. I went there and seen them past an account on an online enthusiest site. That was kind of cool, but most of the pages are there as most percieve, a place to pimp oneself out. The other page I visited, was a totally random thing. I about pooed my pants from the streaming audio (I forgot to make sure my audio was off or down). That feature is kind of nice to enhance who the person is. To bad it loads on startup.
In the right circles of like minded humans. It can be a very cool thing. For randomness and control, I perfer to have my own dawtcawm name.

really? more often then not myspace messes up for me regardless of what browser or internet connection i use. either a person's page won't show up, it just sits there and hangs; or the music won't play, or the link to view their pictures doesn't respond, or the search function won't show up when i click the link. many times i try to navigate through myspace only to see the message stating a technical problem has occurred and it has been forwarded to their technical group. they are similar issues i used to have with livejournal a few months ago (i assume livejournal has upgraded their servers because lj is much better now).
also a co-worker of mine has a myspace page that does not display properly on any browser but IE, it looks completely stretched out on firefox and safari. doesn't look like she's using any special code that would cause that to happen, go figure.

I put this up on my MySpace blog and thought I would share it with the OCF...
After about twenty days of having one, I've come to realize what MySpace really is, or at least what its really used for. It bills itself as a "social networking" site, but what does that mean? Can anyone give me a definitive answer? Didn't think so. So what is it, you ask? Two words:
Social Advertising.
The purpose of a TV commercial (or print ad, or billboard, or whatever)is to get you thinking about a product or service. That way, when you are looking for something in that market, you will gravitate towards the advertised product and not its competitors. A generic example would be Pepsi vs Coke. You see a TV commercial for Coke. You go to the mall and get some lunch. The waiter asks you, "Pepsi or Coke". You think back to the commercial (or it may even be subconscious), and you say "Coke". The commercial has done its purpose. Of course, because most people already know which they like better, this may not be the best example. So example 2: You see a commercial for an HP computer with an Intel processor. The ad, of course, finishes with "Intel Inside". Next time you buy a computer, the rep asks you "Intel or AMD processor". You think back to the ad and say "Intel". Many people haven't even heard of AMD, and most dont know the difference. The fact is, an AMD processor is designed much better than an Intel, and is cheaper, but because of effective advertising, Intel has an 80% or more (forget what it is exactly) market share. The advertising has done its job. (Please excuse my fanboyism :D )
Getting back to MySpace.
When you leave a comment on someones profile, pic, or blog, its essentially advertising. The person leaving the comment is advertising him/herself to the person whose profile the comment is being left on. Sorry if you lost me there. For example, if I leave a comment on Bobby's profile, I am advertising myself to Bobby. Why? Because when Bobby reads my comment, he starts thinking about me. Maybe thinks, "hey, wasn't that fun when me and him were working on barrel rolls and 540 kicks at the dojo that one day? Yeah, that LoneWolf guy is pretty cool". (we're both black belts in Tae Kwon Do) He laughs at my comment. And my "rating" with him, so to speak, goes up. This is absolutely no different than a commercial. Same with your own profile. Who's gonna put embarrassing things about themselves on their own profile? Your profile is a chance to summarize yourself into a form that others can quickly form opinions on. And of course, everyone wants those opinions to be good. Why do you think my profile has a bunch of pics of me flying and blowing stuff up and no mp3s of me singing? :D
The cynic (read: me) could see this as a way for socially insecure people to try to make their friends think better of them, but in reality, what high school/college student isn't at least a little socially insecure? If there was a free way to make your friends think a little better than you in a VERY subtle, even subconscious way, wouldn't you take it?
I give you MySpace, The Social Advertising Site.
Myspace is full of kids taking pictures from above with their hair swept across their face.
Way too emo.

been checking out the site for friends but %90 of the time it is down, or some option like adding a friend or sending a message does not work.
I know the site is free, but if your going to run a site tom - MAKE IT WORK FIRST!
They are using NT 4 Server for this site.. Thought i'd be the Geek and throw that into the equation! :P
The site goes down alot. Its slow. I hate people putting music on there site; Well, to be fair, they should put it on pause by default, its annoying when you open a few pages and they start blasting music out.
I agree with the Advertisement, there is way to MUCH of the crap, its a good job i use Adblock on that site.

I've found there to be very little advertising on there, from myspace, anyway. Plenty of spamming for webcam sites, etc.
As to social advertising...well, yeah. If you want to look at it like that, EVERYTHING you do is social advertising. You do things a certain way to make people think certain things of you, whether you do that conscientiously or not. Personally, I've used it for three things (with three accounts). I've used it as a social experiment, I've used it as a way to make jokes (if you've seen my flashy page, you know exactly what I mean), and I've used it to meet new people and catch up with people I haven't talked to in 8+ years. It is somewhat unreliable, but it really isn't that bad, all things considered.

Whenever you go to a band's MySpace profile, you can click on one of the songs they have up there and click Add. That will add it to your profile and have it auto start. Unfortunatly, you can't have it not auto start, you need your own code for that.

All you myspace haters need to go hug a tree.
Seriously. If you hate it so much, then lock yourself in your room and make pointless rants online that would make the blogs on myspace and livejournal look weak. You say that emo kids simply complain about ****, look what you are doing. If you really want to make a statement then start some protest on a busy street and go out there every friday night with anti-myspace signs so people can drive by and laugh at you.
Granted, I have a myspace account, and I have seen some people with super crappy page designs where you can't read anything, but guess what? No matter what you do there will always be someone doing something like that.

I don't think anyone here is arguing about the idea of myspace(maybe 1 or 2) since its a good idea. But, like you said, crappy pages so you can't read, automatic starting MP3's wasting bandwidth (i know it uses very little, but its besides the point), people adding you and not even talking to you so they can have more friends.
The fact of the matter is, the arguement is more towards the people who are using it and turning it into a ***hole.
I myself have a ancount on Myspace, but only because one of my friends wanted me too, i signed up with my college, and people from College have been adding me and talking to me, i like that, its a good feature/idea; but people abuse the system too much. And the constant server maintence is terrible, even though they have quite a few million users. They should have servers which are better than Windows NT 4 by now.
Saying that, i ain't arguing with the Operating System they are using, more to the point it might show the age of they're servers.

I use it for quite a different reason then most. Its not to be some big social network. I could care less how many or how few friends I have. I just enjoy customizing it. I like being able to make something *my own*.

Its actually quite a lot. 47M users times 2MB/song = Tons and tons of bandwidth. If I was Rupert Murdoch (who now owns MySpace), I would kill the autostarting MP3s.

Just block the code which stops the autoplaying or something, can't they do that?

I've made a myspace on two different occasions, I then cancelled the accounts within the same weekend. Myspace just isn't for me, so now I'm trying facebook out. At least the college side is availible to actual students which limits registration.

I think that MySpace is awesome. I been registered there for about 5 months now and I have meet allot of cool people.
I hated it for a while, then joined.
I use it to keep in touch with old friends. I added about 20 friends that I haven't talked to in over 7 years, and met up with an old college buddy of mine that I haven't talked to in about 6 years. Seeing those people really takes you back to that time and place you remember and its interesting seeing what's changed since then. Its also an efficient way to network.
Other than that, I'll post up a blog of my adventures/vacations so I don't have to e-mail everyone. Anyone who wants can just read my bulletin.
I will close by saying that the teenie-boppers that **** and moan about "why am I not in your top 8?" are stupid.
P.S. Just in cas anyone hasn't seen the MySpace Movie (short film) yet:
