Welcome to the Overclockix club! I wish I could offer some help, but alas, I find myself in the same boat; as such i can only offer sympathy. I plan to successfully install Overclockix to hdd someday. The client config wasn't a problem if I recall...which version of Overclockix are you using?

3.79, I almost fixed the problem however I might try another distro and add LTSP to it.....I really wanted to use OCX however the HDD install is causing headaches....

I had the same problem, and when i randomly tested hdd's The client finally installed on an old quantum fireball. I know this isnt an answer, but it shows that I believe its just a linux/unix hdd setup error, which appears to be happening.

hmmmm you know the current hdd I was testing on is on this system, maybe it's because it's a raptor?...it's reporting as a scsii so maybe the new hdd I am getting with my farm parts will work.

Or the sata is the culprit..... :bang head

just to add. I grabbed the distro and tried on 2 sata drives. neither will install. It worked on the first 2 pata's I tried. a wdd and a maxtor.

so sata = no
pata = yes

hmmmm....

just looked at my order status and UPS hasn't even shipped the boxes yet....

What has brown done for me?...Oh basically lose out on Precious PPD...

can I install the cd in a ramdrive then install from there to a HDD?

not honestly sure, you can run the ramdrive, so you can get some ppd. then prior to the hdd getting to your house, add the tag -oneunit(think, thats the flag) or the -flag that tells it not to get another unit. so that you get the points for that WU and can efectivly install to the hdd.

I finnaly gave up when it would not partition and format the HD. Arkaine will step in at any moment to assist.

can I install the cd in a ramdrive then install from there to a HDD?
These is an option on the desktop to do it. It may be easier that way since you have full access to the os at that point.

I'm having this same problem. I'm trying to use an old 4GB ata33 segate drive.

Try using the ltsp2.1 version of overclockix. I had problems with the 3.79 as well, and i read a thread which arkaine said that ltsp 2.1 was easier to setup for a farm.

If you get a freezing around 60% while copying files....

Make sure during installation that you pick the username for the regular user- knoppix
This seems to fix that little bug.

I've seen a few cases where the partitioning didn't seem to take. In such cases, I:

1) close the installer
2) open a terminal and become root using the su command
3) cfdisk /dev/hda (hda is arbitrary- it assumes your are installing on primary master hard drive, misght be different if you have more than one HDD)
4) using cfdisk you can create a root and a swap partition
5) root needs to be at least 2.2 GB, swap should be 512MB minimum
6) Be sure to write the changes and confirm you want to rewrite the partition table by typing ctrl + w and then typing "yes".

Ok, at this point try the installer again. If it still doesn't see the HDD partitions you just made, you might have to reboot and try the installer again for the kernel to recognize the changes.

3.79 gave me the lot of problems plus when I was able to hd install it, the OS would freeze every time I tried to use anything. Installed LTSP2.1, no problems works great. but now I have a new difficulty, ..the LTSP server.. when I start the client everything is detected properly, os loads, starts, all the usual, but now it said it cant update the time. then it said that folding has started, but also the client 'loses' the server and folding hangs. everything I have tried is of no help. my main rig when netbooted by floppy, is able start and run the folding. no probs, but any other board added will not work. any ideas, maybe it thinks it needs a HD or floppy?

What's the error when you try to netboot additional boxes?

i had the same problem with the time. Arkaine told me to login as root to change it. have you set the ip address range on the server? if one works, but others wont boot, it sounds like it is a problem with the other boards.

strange part of this is when I do get 3.79 to cooperate, and the clients will start to load linux, when it gets to the part where it says that it is starting to fold, everything locks up or folding stops and just hangs there. The Odd part comes in when I add a hard drive just to test, it all works  I refuse to have hard drives just hanging on when i dont need them.

edit: and me being at work ATM, I cant get my jollies working on the rig! I need to solve this problem. as soon as I can get it all to work as it should, then i will be adding the MPI and OpenMosix, so I can begin to do the other thing I have planned.

Bowr!!! Working with the dogs. Hey don't feel to bad, I have to sign off so I can get some sleep and go hang out at work tomorrow.
When I get the chance, I want to load it up again and get to install. I need to DL a new ISO. Then I want to see if I can master a slim client just to look for network, storage on a network or USB drive. Bare minimum with no gui. This remastered will be used for the children folders with one machine having a full Overclockix!
