View Full Version : What is limiting my overall speed ? Need Help.

I have my 1.4 T-Bird at 1.425 with a 150 FSB and everything is stable (been running F@H for weeks).

But, when I try to up the multiplier to get more overall speed, it will post, and sometimes boot, but not stay stable.

I have tried upping the vCore or even dropping the FSB to make the jump a little less steep, but still have stability problems when I enter the 1.5+ realm.

Any ideas? Seems like PCI cards and and such would have issues with FSB speed not overall speed.

Anyone had this problem before.

I have an HEC 300W PSU and the rest of the particulars are in my sig below.

Thanks.

hum... maybe heat, but unlikely... it shouldnt be anything other than your chip. if you are running your FSB at that high, and it runs fine, the only thing stopping you from going up seems to be your chip.

it very well could by your power supply. i had some serious issues with power before (which you can see i fixed in my sig ;)) try more power... these chips really suck power (amps). also, try this... set your FSB to normal (133), and try adjusting your multipler. if it is in fact a problem with chip or power, you wont be able to even bump the multiplier up. try that. or get a friend and borrow his beefier power supply!

OH, another thing you can try is running your system empty. take out everything but what is needed to boot. (ram, video, hard drive). even strip floppy. if this works, its power.

Could be a power problem. At my current settings, my +5 is at 4.78 which seems a bit low.

I did try upping the multiplier at the stock FSB and had stability problems.

Seems like no matter the combo, if I try to hit 1.5, I have stability issues.

Anyone else been able to OC well, with a 300W PSU?

My PSU is a 300 watt

i have an epox 8kha+ w/ a xp 1700. i have a sparkle 300w psu and i am stable at 1650mhz (150x11). I think my psu is holding me back, cuz my temps are good 32c idle, 39c load. I can boot higher but i get errors when running prime95.

thats the one with the kt133a chipset right?
well my chip can only do 1.55ghz cause of this chipset....
sorry i was told this by a buddy of mine (from amd)

It is the KT133A chipset. It just seems odd that the FSB will go up that high, but the total overclock seems to cap at 1.5 or under.

That's what makes me think it is a power problem or something like that since my components seem to be Ok with a higher bus speed.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks all.

well its capable of insane fsb's but the reason why wit caps out is way to hard to explain,
mostly cause i didnt understand it

personally ou dont need a mega watt PS to run a high end system, just a good 5v rail. I have a Generic (came iwth system) 200watt max PS, and running

A 1.33@1.53
60 gig HD, CDR, CDROM
network card,
130cfm intake 120mm
Glaciator HS, and a 120mm xhaust in top and also a 80mm panaflow in rear for exhaust
NIC Card, USB webcam and digital camera
256 mb mem.

ANd it is totaly stable, maybe im jst lucky but my sstem is fine and i dont plan on upgrading my PS - it gets the job done, dont ask me how??

If u want pics to prove it ill attach em

What's your 5V @ with that OC ?

I am thinking maybe that is my issue, maybe my 5V will not stay high / stable enough to support the higher speed. I am at 4.78 (from MBM) at the OC in my sig.

Multiplier and overall speed should not affect other components (Vid Card, HDD, NIC, etc..) at all right ? Only the FSB affects that stuff, or am I wrong?

Thanks.

Your +5v is no problem at 4.78. Im running my Duron 600@1150 and I have a fulload +5v at 4.78 too, np here! The +5v shouldn't go above +10%/-10% then it's becoming a problem.

Any ideas on what could be holding me back then?

I have even tried to lower the FSB back to stock and then up the multiplier and at 1.5 it just doesn't go.

I upped the vCore and got Win2K to load and run for a few minutes above 1.5, but then got the BSOD and then it had trouble posting. Had to leave it sit for a few minutes before I could post again. But, heat was not an issue.

Ideas ???

I have a kt7a, before I flashed the bios I maxed out at 1133 (8X133), after the bios flash I am up at 8X150 with no issues at all. I have also noticed that win2k pro (I run it also) is alot more finiky about stability than win9x. Try taking out your cards and see if that will allow you to go up higher, it may rule out the power question in that with no cards in there, there is a lot less power being used. My 5v rail drops as low as 4.61 and I never stability issues, I can fold or prime95 for hours and have no crashes at all. I hope this helps a little.

i stopped there and wanted to practice on my own board wheh i get it,
sorry man but that chipset wont take it
