View Full Version : Any of these worth keeping to fold with?
I got this email at work. I can probably get 1 or more of these, just curious if it's worth the trouble. They are heavier than heck and I will just set them up in the basement.

I'd say the first or second one. 2-4 instances of folding is pretty good, I think the first one would outpreform the second, but the second would get WU's done faster. Can you overclock it? Bring that 450 up to 600, then we're talkin!

i would take the second one. 3.5 gigs of ram, dual 550mhz, four 9.1 gig drives (am i reading that correctly), how much ram does the first one have?
Not sure about the first one. I'm on 3rd shift right now so the only way I can communicate with work is via email. I wouldnt' have a problem with adding memory to 1 or 2 to get it up to par.
Guess I'd better go surf ebay for a good rack, as all of these are rack-mount (I finally have an excuse to put everything in racks instead of in lines across the floor.

ya, they all will FOLD and from a science POV, anything FOLDing is good, but from a point/$ (hardware and electricity to run) ... id be surprised if 2x of these rigs could keep up with 1x P4 @3GHz. (assuming QMD's last forever...)
so its really up to you if you dont mind the increased electric bill...FARM them puppies!!!
any that are above 400 Mhz i would keep for sure the first 4 rigs cause that would give you 12 cpu's to fold on
i have a old dual 500 that gets ribo's and puts out about 50ppd on each cpu :p

borg em for yatta!
Geez ... i remember selliing a few thousand of those type servers to my last customer when i worked at ibm!
I doubt they will OC ... IBM bios never had any way to do it.
take out all those drives and just run with 1, and maybe downsize the mem to reduce electric bill. Server raid supported hot swap, raid 5.
I can't remember but i hope these were after micro channel.
Shipping these around wont be cheap ,,, you might be able to sell off extra scsi drives to recoup some of the shipping expense .. or just ship the parts ... psu's might be heavy ... in fact there might be redundant psu's in them.
IBM site had pretty good tech support ... bios, docs, tech ref manuals when I was last there.
Not sure what os you plan on running on that quad ... is was probably running MS Server - doubt if xp will support them?
edit ... last time i ran these rigs it was using os/2!! Might still have a copy of it. Was there a folding client that runs under dos? os/2 had dos support .... sorry ... i seem to be wandering down memory lane ..... :)
