So, my UV CC got the idea that it could burn down my house while I was showering. I just heard what sounded like a leak, and my first thought was "omg, I got a leak somewhere in my WC setup" So I go through frantically looking, and then I notice, that is a light where there shouldnt be. Odd. Look at it, and my UV CC is partially ON FIRE So im sitting there with my computer with a flame inside, trying to quickly trace the line to see where its power cable is. Pull it out, and yank the CC out. The wires are both charred, and it looks like it was just going father up the line. I would of hated to have seen what happened if I hadnt caught it in time.

Hopefully everything is ok with your system. Last time something caught fire in my case, it took everything with it :(

I had a set of 4" UV CC in my Shuttle, and one day I noticed a burning smell. Sure enough, they looked just like yours. The actual cathode tube inside the plexi was melting into the plexi and the wires were charred. Scarry. I have since removed all CC in all of my systems. I switched to LED bars instead. Much more reliable, and they look sweet also.

i had something similar. a while back, there was a strange smell in my house.you could smell it more as you came up the stairs. it smelt like TCP.(dont know if you get this in the states. its an antiseptic throat wash.that you gargle with) so i automatically thought hmm must of spilt something like it somewhere.(we got loads of diff chemicals and cleaning stuff. for building things etc up stairs. we don't use downstairs much. that's the lodgers space)
anyway this smell got stronger and stronger over a couple of days. then i noticed that the light in my PC was off. so i whipped the side off and a misty smoke jumped out and tried to suffocate me. the little power box for my strip light was the cause. i took the brittle smoldering top off it to find all the inside totally melted and stinking of TCP. luckily nothing else got harmed. so now i only have one installed..by a different brand. and its in a well ventilated part of my case. and i regularly check it.

That wont work, ive had several CCFL tubes burn on me, and so have other people i know. It just tends to happen i guess.

MD, how long was it on when it happened? I found my CCFL's to flicker and sometimes burn when they'd been on for more then 6 / 8 hours straight.

It was a couple days ago. And mine were usually always on whenever my system was on. I had never had an issue like that before. I will look into the LED bars, as mentioned by bchur83

Should've grabbed a few marshmellows while you were at it.

Glad to hear everything is OK though.

Until about three minutes ago my case had 6 CC UV lights in .. 4x 4" and 2x 12". A few years ago I tore the whole beast apart and applied UV paint mostly everywhere. I've had my lights (all of them) on with the system no for over a year. (Comp stays on 24/7). Never again will i allow these suckers to go unsupervised. Thanks for the tip, and thanks to all the rest of you that posted your woes/relations to this incident. Glad I read this before anything happened.

Bahh! now I have to mod my PC again to return it to it's former visual prowess. :bang head

looks like a brand of CC I got for one of my projects. Looks like I am going to be switching to LED lighting now. I cant have that big wood box catching fire!

How are CCs be comming so popular if they are catching on fire and such? And does anyone know the reason for the bad wiring or what causes it to short?

They were some Logisys ones. I switched over to LEDs. Happy with them.
SemperFiGuy, keep everything as it is, but replace the CCs with LED lights.

my friend and I did a similar thing once. Many moon ago, we had some extra parts, dont know where, how, or why we got them. We threw them together, thinking that it might work. We had no clue what a mobo looked like at that time, especially one that was really out dated. We pluged it in. The power cord started to flame! AHHH!!!:O
got scared, and I just ran like hell-o! he grabbed the cord, and we started to air out the place. From what I could tell, -->I<-- (:() might have messed up the power cord hookup to the power button on the case, either taht or the PSU was faulty.
heh
